Uncommon boys names - shortlist?!

We’ve got a shortlist of sorts! But we’re still struggling with falling in love with a name. It was so easy with DD, so it’s getting me down a bit! 🥺

Hoping this thread will help us finally fall for one of them!

Need something short to go with our surnames and uncommon, to go with sis named Vada. What’s your favourite/least favourite? Any other suggestions in a similar vein?

Cato
Iven (softer spelling, can’t get past Russian feel of Ivan)
Levin
Amos
Eden
Linus
Asa (sounds too much like Vada?)

Middle name James or August (for my late Dad). Neither works for us as a first name. 🫠

How about Jaro, pronounced Jarrow, or Jago?

I was also hoping this when people said my son would get a specific tease if I called him the name I wanted to call him.

5 years later, they were totally right. Kids can be super mean.

Oh no. I hope he's weathering it well, @okayhescereal . Five seems young for the bullying to begin, but I guess not. 😥

Linus.

Lincoln
Ambrose
Alistair
Lyle
Edward.

Lincoln was on our list (love Linc for a nn) but we ditched it for being a little over-long (for us), and too surname-y. Might have to reconsider!

In his school the reception playground shares a fence with the year 4-6 playground. I think the insults came from the older kids and the younger ones followed suit.

We've been doing lots of work on bigging up his name at home. Talking about the relative he's named for, the meaning of the name (which is pretty cool) and fabulous people in history and literature which share his name. So hoping that'll be the feeling that sticks rather than kids being shitty.

Those little monsters. Sounds like you're doing a great job of boosting his confidence and self-esteem. One day I bet he'll absolutely LOVE his name.

It's wild but some kids can find a way to bully with the most basic of ingredients if they're that way inclined, so imo it's worth giving him a strong name he can identify with and be proud when all that is behind him!

Yeah that was a large part of why I stuck with the name regardless of it being a relatively easy target. If you're going to be bullied they'll find something!! Also he starts martial arts next week so I think confidence won't be an issue😏

Linus James

Yes, any name can be teased if a bully wants to tease. The most common teased name in our primary school is William with Willy!

Was that when you were at school or do you work in one today? @MerryMarys You would have thought William would be safe as there’s usually at least 2 or 3 even today in most schools- not to mention all the Dad’s also called William. Gosh if kids aren’t safe with such a popular name, it just goes to show any name might be fair game…

I guess it’s not the popularity that is at play as much as the fact it shortens to Willie. Children hear “ Willie” and don’t stop to think about where it sits in the top 100 names.

RogueFemale · 01/09/2024 00:54

London born and bred meanie here.

Cato - meh
Iven (softer spelling, can’t get past Russian feel of Ivan) - terrible spelling, and if you're not Russian, why? May as well call him Ivun.
Levin - surname of Ira Levin is all it makes me think. No joy sparked.
Amos - seriously?
Eden - girl
Linus - the pathetic boy in Peanuts cartoon
Asa (sounds too much like Vada?) - sounds not enough like anything

Middle name James or August (for my late Dad). Neither works for us as a first name. Really like James and August.

Oh absolutely kid’s aren’t going to bother about whether a name is top 100 or not. I just meant if there are already “cool” older boys at the school called William who don’t get hassle then maybe the younger William’s wouldn’t? I also wonder if accent comes into play - many seem to get called “Will - yum” here, there doesn’t seem to be the middle “ee” syllable for Willy.
