Baby due in 10 weeks and still not sure what name we're going to go with. We have four favourites, though atm I don't feel very certain on any of them:

  • Wilfred: Would shorten to Wilf a lot, which I think is cute, though worry it's a bit posh sounding.
  • Oisin - (with a fada but I can't do it on my laptop!) - Partner is Irish. Do like the name, but just not 100% on it and child will grow up in England with English accent etc.
  • Sylvester - A new name to the table. I actually do really like this, but worry it's a mouthful and no decent nicknames. Cat association is purely positive for me, don't mind Stallone association that much either.
  • Kester - Like it, but a bit unusual and do not want baby to be called Kes by anyone.

We're tending towards the more unusual but mostly I think because by now one of us has veto'd most of the more common names - my taste is probably a bit hipster (Magnus, Casper, Reuben, Felix etc.) whereas his taste ranges from old man (Frank, Larry) to very unusual (Seneca). Other suggestions welcome, as well as opinions on the above names.

I like all of your names except Kester, which rhymes with fester, moreso than Sylvester imo.

Frank is a great name though. It could be short for Francis or Franklin.

mathanxiety · 21/08/2024 21:53

If DH likes Seneca, would he consider Atticus?

Littletreefrog · 21/08/2024 21:53

Not Kester if you dont like Kes. How about Orson?

I've suggested this but he said no! Too strongly associated with the one character for him apparently. Despite Seneca being so strongly associated with Seneca.

Frank I am just not a big fan, and he doesn't like Francis.

Oisin is the best from your list, Francis is a lovely middle name
I don't mind Frank as a first name because of the legend that is Frank Black
but maybe you could persuade DH into Francis Oisin and he can call him Frank, you can call him Francis.

I think if we did this, we'd just both feel like we're compromising too much! Plus I am not sure we like either of those names more than all of the above anyway.

Oswin? Otto?

BoleynMemories13 · 21/08/2024 22:12

None are massively to my taste but I would choose Wilfred out of those. Kester is a big no.

Sebastian seems like it might be up your street? Same vibe as Sylvester, cool nn option in Seb, cute nn option in Sebby. It's quite versatile.

Or Stanley and Sidney sprang to mind.

Meeko505 · 21/08/2024 22:12

I would say other than Oisin I don't think I usually like O names! Oswin and Otto sound too old-fashioned and too German to me. Orson is a bit nicer but just seems inferior to Oisin.

Wilfred is lovely - I’m not usually a fan of retro hipster type names (aka all the Great- Grandad names like Stanley, Albert etc -unless they actually are old family names) but Wilfred reminds me of poet Wilfred Owen and is close enough to a mix of very classic popular names (William and Frederick/Freddie) that I don’t think you have to worry about it sounding too posh or trendy.

Oisin is nice enough - but then I live in Wales where Osian is very popular and everyone knows how to pronounce it. Don’t know if I would risk it in England, if there were other names I liked as much.

Couldn’t use Kester or Sylvester personally- brilliant for pets names but after someone mentioned “Chester the molester” , I’m wary of dodgy rhyming for boys. But I do prefer Sylvester of the two as it has a lovely sound and meaning (similar Sylvan might be an option?).

MerryMarys · 21/08/2024 22:21

I really like your suggestions of Magnus, Casper, Reuben, Felix or how about
Quentin
Marcus
Rufus

AFlashOfLight · 21/08/2024 22:26

I love Sylvester - beautiful meaning. Would have been a strong contender if I'd had a boy.

I actually already have a Sebastian - which is one thing, I worry that Sylvester is just a little too similar.

Wilfred strikes me as the 'safest' name from your list.

Do you have a preference on number of syllables?

Are single syllable names something you'd consider - Sean? Seth? Don?

Silas? Elvin? Josiah? Edison?

I think two syllables or more is better. Three to four is OK but would prefer a nickname to go with longer names, not sure why! Not sure about those names - one thing is DH really doesn't like anything that sounds too biblical or old testament in particular.

I actually love Sylvester. But it's kind of catty. Lol a bit like Felix. And Magnus is my mates cats name. Not that it's bad to be associated with cats as they're the coolest animals.
I love Ruan, Fintan, Finbar. Oisin is quite good but would be mispronounced all day.
Frederick and Albert and Franklin are nice as old man type names.
I like Sky as well, that's a bit hippyish.

Berlinlover · 21/08/2024 22:49

Oisin will never work with an English accent.

theduchessofspork · 22/08/2024 05:38

I like Kester but if you don’t like Kes then don’t. Sylvester a bit twinny with Sebastian, Oisin will be a PITA in the UK, Wilfred / Wilf is nice, but there are quite a few of them - it’s mainstream not posh

Other ideas -

Cassian
Laurence (Laurie)
Augustus (Gus)
Caius
Ronan
Corin

Philip (Pip)

Gawain
Aneurin (Nye)

sel2223 · 22/08/2024 06:31

I really like Wilf

Probably wouldn't go Sylvester with a Sebastian (also don't like sly as a nn)

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/08/2024 06:36

I really love Frank. That’s the best name you’ve mentioned IMO!

I like Wilfred best from your list. Not sure how to say Oisin but I like how it looks and the nod to his Irish heritage - I’m sure it’s easy to learn how to pronounce.

I wouldn’t pair Sylvester with Sebastian. Don’t like Kester at all.

Oh definitely not Sylvester then if you already have a Sebastian!

Wilfred goes the best. Seb and Wilf :-)

You could use Kees (Dutch name) as a nickname for Kester instead of Kes?

Kees (Dutch: [keːs]) is a masculine nickname, contracted (shortened) name, or given name common in the Netherlands,[2] originally derived from the name Cornelis

I know you said you don't fancy O names that much, but just to let you know that Oscar is also Irish in case it's of interest at all. He was Oisín's son in the old legends.
