Baby girl name

Just wondering what some thoughts were on the name we have picked out for baby girl # 2
Saylor Mae💕
pronouncer SAY-ler
Saylor means tiny dancer
Mae means pearl which is the birthstone of my grandma in heaven.
We adore the name, but I know not everyone has the same taste just curious what some options are.
Thank you !

Is she always Saylor Mae, or just Saylor? The spelling is annoying tbh but otherwise it sounds OK when spoken.

Cattery · 19/08/2024 18:34

I love it but spelt Sailor x

miniaturepixieonacid · 19/08/2024 18:38

I love the meaning. Sounds quite pretty too. I prefer Sayler to Sayler Mae. Do you mean to call her both or is Mae the middle name?

I don't think you could spell it Sailor as a pp suggests. Presumably that would change the meaning to that of an actual sailor?

SossijRoll · 19/08/2024 18:52

Honestly? I don’t like it. But that’s irrelevant.

Plus Mae is one of the most overused girl’s middle names there is. It’s been done to death, regardless of whatever meaning is behind it.

She’ll just be yet another ‘something’ Mae/May/Mai. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Willow0909 · 19/08/2024 19:01

mae would be the middle name :)

I would be much more mainstream classic in my taste for my own kids but I really like it and think it's lovely it's meaningful to you. Mae is popular but that's because it works well with so many names Smile

Holidayhell22 · 19/08/2024 19:04

I don’t like it because everyone will spell it Sailor.
People don’t pay any attention to how things are spelt in emails.

sel2223 · 19/08/2024 19:07

I like it and I like the meaning behind the names

Highandloww · 19/08/2024 22:34

Immediately think of Sailor Moon, but this manga character may not be as popular in the UK. However the Japanese culture is getting very favoured atm.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/08/2024 22:44

I’d also spell it Sailor as it’s nowhere near as well known as similar Taylor as a name - so she is going to be correcting Sailor for the rest of her life. (I think a famous model has a daughter called Sailor?)

I guess you could argue the same spelling issue with Mae vs May - but at least both spellings are well recognised as names so everyone will easily understand “Mae with an E”.

I’d personally go for Mae Saylor instead - Mae is much more timeless and elegant sounding as a first name imo but Saylor makes for a fun middle name (and you don’t have to spell middle names as often!)

SkaneTos · 19/08/2024 22:48

I think it's a very pretty name!

What language/culture is the name/word Saylor from? I have never heard it before.

theduchessofspork · 19/08/2024 23:07

I think people will think it’s Sailor so will spell it wrong and also think it’s an odd name, so I don’t think she’ll thank you.

Mae is nice though, although I prefer the May spelling. Use that as her first name perhaps?

I think it’s just one of those made up baby site meanings, TBH

mathanxiety · 19/08/2024 23:19

If you got the spelling and the meaning of Saylor from some baby name site online or from a baby name book, be aware that most of the material in those sites and books is not factual.

"The name Saylor is a boys name..."
"The name Saylor comes from the German for 'boat worker' or 'mariner'.."
"The name Saylor comes from the medieval French word for acrobat..."
"The name Saylor comes from the Anglo Saxon for "rope maker"..."

^ Just did a quick google.

Saylor Mae sounds nice. If it's the name you love, just use it for that reason. I wouldn't trust name sites or name books.

Willow0909 · 19/08/2024 23:58

Yes! Kristin Cavallari does have a daughter named Saylor (she spells it like this too) I personally think Sailor would be pronounced more SAIL-er and we like SAY-ler where there is more emphasis on the first syllable Say and the ler is softer. I think it’s softer and prettier / girlier!

Hi! Thank you! I know I did my research and there are several meanings of the name depending on which country it’s referring to. I noticed this with a lot of names though, they do have several meanings. spelled Saylor comes up the most as dancer. If you research how many girls are given the name vs boys it’s very uncommon as a boys name and much more popular as a girls name

Honestly I think you are setting her up for a lifetime of saying, "Saylor. Like Taylor but with an S."

I agree with a PP that Mae is better as a first name.

This is what went through my head too. Like Taylor with an S.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 20/08/2024 00:13

I think it's pretty.

RogueFemale · 20/08/2024 02:36

Everyone, literally everyone, will hear Sailor.

Saylor may mean 'tiny dancer', but your daughter will be a grown adult one day, not tiny, nor a tiny dancer.

Sailor would actually be better, at least original and correctly spelt.

Mae is a suffix or middle name done to death. Use it only if you're good with its widespread popularity.

SuckPoppet · 20/08/2024 08:29

I like Calypso as a dance linked name.

Calypso Mae is nice.

FilthyRich · 20/08/2024 09:21

Not my taste and I don't like the spelling. I don't think anyone will say Saylor different to Sailor. Isn't Mae just a variant of May, which was traditionally a variant of Mary.

I don't know what baby name site you got the name meanings from, but they aren't all that reliable. This one is quite good: Meaning, origin and history of the name Saylor - Behind the Name.

In the nicest way this is her mum talking

Everyone is going to say it Sailor - not least because in a lot of accents, including mine, sailor is pronounced say-luh, exactly as you want this said. She’s going to spend a lot of time spelling it

user1492757084 · 20/08/2024 10:08

Saylor Mae is nice enough.

You could name her after any ballet character, a ballerina you admire or a dance connected name. Margot is also an option instead of Mae - after the Prima Ballerina Absotuta, Margot Fonteyn.

Allegra Margot
Clara Mae
Odette Mae
Anna Margaret
Giselle Margot
Chante Mae
Valentina Margot
Sylphie Mae
