I used to know a recruitment consultant called Jesse. He was decidedly fuckable, so a fine name IMO!

shoshe · 17/04/2008 07:37

I soooooooo wanted to call DS Jesse, but everybody said NO very loudly (was 30 years ago mind) brill name, I will have to keep mentioning name to DDIL

Nemoandthefishes · 17/04/2008 07:40

if we have a boy next time he will be samuel jesse
my grandad is moses jesse and he is 82 and a very manly man

oiFoiF · 17/04/2008 07:41

i like it but i wouldnt use it because of the conotations of the use of the word 'jessie/y'. But this depends on what circles you mix in/schooling etc

I think one of the problems with naming babies is that we always imagine that our children are going to grow up beautiful, strong, confident, outgoing and able to deal effortlessly with any teasing (or worse) they will get as a result of their name. And probably they will. But it's just possible that they will grow up small, shy, stammering and hugely easily embarrassed. For a boy like that, having a "girl's" name might just be too much to bear. Imagine being a foot shorter than all the rest of the year 8 boys, bookish and unable to kick a football. Now imagine being those things and with a girl's name. I know that Jesse is a boy's name, so do you and so does everyone on Mumsnet. But trust me, most people "out there" won't!

I adore that name for a boy. If he eventually ends up not liking Jesse, Jess is just as nice as a nickname.

2sugars · 17/04/2008 08:07

And I would think that any parents who called their ds that were comfortable in their own skin.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 17/04/2008 08:31

I vote yes.

I have a nephew called Jesse, he's almost 12 now, and he's never been teased about it. I'm sure he'd soon deal with anyone who tried!

It's a lovely name.

Amapoleon · 17/04/2008 08:46

I love the name but my husband, the big macho man that he is [yeah right] said "over my dead body, he will get bullied"

lottiejenkins · 17/04/2008 08:54

Jesse was my Mums Grandads name in the late 1800's!!

noonar · 18/04/2008 08:39

the thing is, children these days are used to far more unusual names than we were when we were growing up. (boys in may class awere either paul, mark, matthew etc etc) i think that the people who are saying that he might be teased, are imagining that THEY might have been teased, growing up in the 60s/ 70s or whenever, when people actually used the term 'big jesse'.

i think any lack of understanding about this choice of name will come from older generations- not his peers. there's alot of projection going on here, iykwim.

duchesse · 18/04/2008 08:48

Lovely old Testament name.

I think it's beautiful. Whether or not he gets bullied because of it will depend on his personality and how he carries it. Children are mean to each other all the time and names are just one thing they use to get at each other. If he turns out to be a complete dude, he's unlikely to suffer at all because of it. He could always shorten it for school purposes if he has trouble. It's a shame that so many parents fail to give their children (sons especially) lovely names because they fear that there will be name-calling/ changing over it (would hesitate to call it bullying unless it becomes a campaign).

BethanG · 18/04/2008 22:06

My friend has a lovely boy called Jesse and I love the name. However being a northerner I can't get the "you big jesse" thing out of my head totally, so maybe as a second name?

It was our boy choice (only name we both loved and we came up with seperately) but I also started a thread on here asking about it and was a little relieved I had girl so didn't have to 'face my fears'

It's a cool name though.

scottishmummy · 18/04/2008 22:11

look at this Jesse

Tinker · 18/04/2008 22:16

Oh, there's loads of cool ones - Jesse Owen, Jesse James, Jesse Jackson. I actually think it's a really manly name.

suwoo · 18/04/2008 22:18

We loved it and was very high on the list for DS but we chickened out.

vanloadtovenice · 18/04/2008 22:59

Jesse Wood is Rolling Stones son, I think. I think it's a bit american and gender ambiguous (sp?). Same thing for Joss. Jago?

Tinker · 18/04/2008 23:01

Bob Dylan has a Jesse as well. (Primary source of my love for name. Partner's source was The Dukes of Hazzard )
