Hi!
What do you think of the name Kasper for a little boy?

And, what nationality might you assume he/his parents might be?
Does it evoke any particular country/region in your mind? Thankyou!

@localnotail , the ghost was Casper. I prefer the Caspar spelling.

But they all sound the same?

Celia24 · 09/08/2024 23:17

This is my partner's name and he's Danish. It's a common male name there.

FayCarew · 09/08/2024 23:26

@localnotail , I commented on my preferred spelling, not on the sound.

I have a Kaspar and a cousin has a Casper. We have some German ancestry.

Kitkat1523 · 09/08/2024 23:27

I know of one Jasper…age 6 ….parents are latvian
kasper not jasper

StormingNorman · 09/08/2024 23:31

Kasper would make me think of eastern or Northern Europe.

I like the name.

TeenLifeMum · 09/08/2024 23:32

It’s an ice cream / dessert cafe chain round here. I do like Casper though.

Well I'm sorry, I just dont understand the whole "different spelling" thing if the name sounds the same! What is the point? How its written is much less important than how it sounds.

I have a normal-sounding name (think Helen, Irene, etc) that has been spelled "specially". I can tell you its a real ball ache! And also embarrassing.

SkaneTos · 09/08/2024 23:35

I think Kasper is a great name!

For nationality I would guess Scandinavian or German.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/08/2024 23:38

I'd guess Scandinavian or Dutch. I like it, although I'd spell it with a C were I to use it since I'm English in England.

Sunshine9218 · 09/08/2024 23:40

Taught a Polish Kasper once but does it matter what nationality it makes.you think.of?

FayCarew · 09/08/2024 23:55

@localnotail , but the spelling matters. How it looks changes how I see the name.

I appreciate that a name with more than one spelling might cause problems.

Danish?

Unless it’s got strong cultural links for you I’d spell it Caspar, or he will be forever correcting it, especially as Caspar has got a bit more popular lately

Caspar is the typical UK spelling, Casper more popular in the US.

Beyond that, some people are interested in spellings because they can carry the cultural history of a name, or just because written language is important to them ie they read a lot. it would be a dull world if we were all the same…

The ones I know are Polish

Caspar (magus) - Wikipedia

The first Caspar I met was spelt that way. The name was a bit unusual then but it suited him. Wasn't familiar with the Casper spelling before the film was released.

Thanks for subtly suggesting I'm a bit of an uneducated dumbo and dont read ))

To me, this spelling business is an odd thing as the language I grew up with does not allow alternative spelling. If you misspell even one letter the word/ name would sound different and it would basically be a sign that you can't spell.

But, with English - was it Samuel Pepys who said something along the lines that only dull people spell the word the same way twice )) I have a friend who's child is called Khortney. Such fun.

polkadotpixie · 10/08/2024 13:00

I'd say Danish like ex-Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel who is the only Kasper I know

Bigearringsbigsmile · 10/08/2024 13:01

Kasper is polish to me
