Eleanor to Eleanora, Elora or Eliora?

We called our DD Eleanor but didn't realise what a popular name it is and she also just doesn't feel quite like an Eleanor. I have an incredibly common name paired with an incredibly common surname as does DH and would like something slightly more unique for my DD.

She hasn't been called anything except Ellie or endearments so changing the birth certificate wouldn't affect her.

I like Eliora

RuthW · 08/08/2024 12:06

All are lovely and much nicer than Eleanor, however if you are calling her Ellie what's the point as Ellie is a thousand times more popular that Eleanor. There will probably be about 4 Ellie's in her class.

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/08/2024 12:08

I like Elora as anything too long will always get shortened to Ellie anyway, whereas I could imagine calling myself Elora as a full name at work etc without it being too much of a mouthful. It also gives the nn options of Lora / Lorrie if she likes when older.

Another option is to use Nell / Nellie as a shortening for Eleanor if you wanted something less commonly used as a day to day name?

oohyoudevilyou · 08/08/2024 12:08

Elodie is nicer than Eleanor I think

Floralnomad · 08/08/2024 12:11

I really fail to see the point if her name is basically Ellie , unless you plan to start calling her something else day to day .

MrsStottlemeyer · 08/08/2024 12:11

Elora is much nicer IMO. One of my DC has a friend called Elora, she usually goes by Lori or Rara

Growsomeballswoman · 08/08/2024 12:12

Elena

Normallynumb · 08/08/2024 12:13

I like Elora
Nell would work as a shortening for Eleanor I think

Peonies12 · 08/08/2024 12:15

If she's called Ellie anyway, and would continue to be called that, I can't see the point in changing birth certificate? Will just be giving her the hassle of a less common name throughout her life. I have a common name and surname and I'm grateful for that!

Elliearna (not sure how you spell this ). Heard it the other day and thought it was lovely.

WaitingForMojo · 08/08/2024 12:24

Eleanor is my favourite name ever. I didn’t use it because of the popularity and becoming one of many Ellies. I really regret not using it. It’s beautiful, don’t change it!!

If you do want to change it, I love Elodie.

PinkChaires · 08/08/2024 12:31

How old is she? Would you use the new name instead of ellie ? If so i would do elora because its closest so easier transition

The one I know with that pronounciation is Eliana

PortiasBiscuit · 08/08/2024 12:33

We have a Nellie, it suits her.

Firsttimebabymummy · 08/08/2024 12:45

I like Eleanor the best from those. As above, no post changing if she goes by Ellie anyway. You could change nn to Nelly as suggested above which is cute, or Nora.

Scissorsisters · 08/08/2024 12:45

Eleni is pretty

Abouttimeforanamechange · 08/08/2024 13:04

I like Eleanor better than all the other suggestions.

What about Helen or Helena?

I wouldn't choose Eliora - I suspect it would often be misspelled, with the i being missed out.

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 08/08/2024 13:09

Don't change her name, how pointless if she's known as Ellie. And if you must, not Eliora, it's awful.

LemonRobin · 08/08/2024 13:34

5 months. To be honest, she reacts most to ‘baby’!

Ellie and Eleanor are fine.
I don't like the other names. I don't see the point of adding an a at the end to get Eleanora. Elora and Eliora aren't very nice.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 08/08/2024 14:01

Eleanor is a classic name. Timeless. I feel the other names you are suggesting are a bit 'made up' or of the moment and later won't age as well. I would stick with Eleanor.

FayCarew · 08/08/2024 14:09

Hear, hear

KnottyKnitting · 08/08/2024 14:14

Elora and Eliora sound made up- Elodie is nice and I also really like Eloise.

But having an Eleonor myself, I definitely prefer it! ( She was known as Ellie when she was little and now prefers Elle.)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/08/2024 14:17

Nell or Nellie.
