Struggling to agree on a name for our baby girl. We like Rose as a middle name. So far we have

Evelyn (but don’t like Evie or Eve as NN)
Elsie (Rose too short?)
Etta-Rose (different middle name)
Madelyn

any other suggestions or preference please, DS has a short 1 syllable name

Etta Rose Surname

Lovely

Velvetbee · 07/08/2024 07:42

Etta Rose. No hyphen. Strong and pretty.

SossijRoll · 07/08/2024 08:32

Rose is every girl’s middle name (along with May/Grace). Evelyn will be Evie and she’ll just be another Evie Rose, same with Elsie. It’s just so overused.

I don’t like Etta, it feels like half a name.

Elspeth
Olive
Emma
Enela
Isolde
Joy

Evelyn (but don’t like Evie or Eve as NN) - She'll be Evie.
Elsie (Rose too short?) - not keen
Etta-Rose (different middle name) - don't like the hyphen. Ate a rose. Ouch!
Madelyn don't like the spelling. She'll be Maddie.

Rose is a filler middle name.

LizzieBet14 · 07/08/2024 09:02

Etta ❤️

Happiestwhen · 07/08/2024 09:05

In Ireland Evelyn is pronounced as 'Evlyn' which is softer sounding I think. Do you like that? You would probably be correcting people her whole life though.

Happiestwhen · 07/08/2024 09:10

Sorry meant to say it wouldn't be shortened to Eve or Evie then because it doesn't really sound like them. I think this "Ev" pronunciation is popular in a few countries around the world.

BoleynMemories13 · 07/08/2024 09:35

I think you can scrap Evelyn as I don't think you'll be able to escape the inevitable Evie shortening.

Personally I'm not keen on Etta, it just sounds unfinished which I sense you feel too as it's the only name on your list you're considering hyphenating? Personally I find hyphens pointless. They inevitably get dropped.

Elsie Rose is ok, but have you considered Elizabeth Rose nn Elsie if you feel it's a bit short or nicknamey?

I like Madeleine, but really dislike your spelling.

You seem to be drawn to E names. Have you considered any of these?

Eliza Rose
Elodie Rose
Elora Rose
Eloise Rose
Elena Rose
Eleanor Rose
Esme Rose
Emma Rose
Emmeline Rose
Emily Rose

Also, if you love Rose please ignore any rude comments about it being a 'filler middle name'. It's a popular middle name choice as it's classic and flows so well with most names, plus it's a beautiful flower which is special to many people, giving it meaning. Also, it's historical use in families means many use it to honour relatives. It's only natural that certain names are going to be repeated more than most in the middle name slot, for all these reasons.

Something doesn't have to be unusual to hold meaning. Someone picking something more unusual doesn't automatically equate to them putting more thought into the name. At the end of the day, don't most people just pick something they love? If that's Rose (or Grace, May, Louise, Jane, James, George etc) so be it.

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/08/2024 09:39

Elsie is my favourite- pretty and simple. Madelyn second. Evelyn is lovely but hard to avoid the Evie shortenings. Etta-Rose is my least favourite.

FayCarew · 07/08/2024 09:45

The comments about Rose being a filler middle name aren't rude. It flows and is pretty, but every other Elsie (or one of the other names) will be Elsie Rose/Grace/May.

It's like the 2010s/2020s version of the Anne/Jane/Louise of the 1960s/1970s/1980s.

It was Maria for me and about 10 others in my class 🤣

Peonies12 · 07/08/2024 10:29

Don't use Evelyn if you don't like the shortened versions. Etta is really nice - but I just think Rose as a middle name is so common. Elsie is lovely to. Why not agree once baby is here, we're due next week and only have a list!

SossijRoll · 07/08/2024 10:40

How is it rude? It’s fact. I work with children and they’re all Evie/Lily/Elsie/Isla/Amelia/Olivia/Ella Rose/Grace/May.

Well it is rude given that OP has chosen it and hasn't actually asked for opinions on the middle name. For all we know it has meaning to them, which negates the term 'filler' which suggests it's been chosen with little thought, just because it goes.

Even if it was picked 'just because', it's nothing to do with us. Middle names are so rarely used so I really don't understand why so many on here are snobby over other people choosing popular middle name choices. Just like certain first names are far more popular than others, by nature there will always be certain middle names which are always leading the way.

Better to have a middle name which flows nicely and potentially has meaning through family or other links than something obscure just to be different. Over ninety percent of the people we ever meet in life will have no idea what our middle names are, so there's really no point in going all out to be different. If someone wants to, that's their prerogative, but equally if someone chooses Rose that's their prerogative.

*I've edited parts to clarify as, reading back, I think you may think my comments were aimed at you. They weren't.

You were indeed stating a fact. Saying it's popular is fact, calling it 'filler' (as others did) is rude as it suggests zero thought. Who are we to know how much thought has been put into someone else's name choice? More to the point, why does it matter to other people what middle name someone else is choosing?

Choosing a name is such a personal thing. For everyone who wants their child to stand out and be different, they'll be someone else just wanting their child to easily fit in.

There's nothing wrong at all in pointing out that someone's name choice is popular, as you did, in case they're not aware and it would bother them. It is rude though to describe someone's choice as a filler name, as others have. I see people use that phrase all the time on here even when someone has already explained their choice, eg "We'll be using the middle name Grace after my Nan" - "don't use Grace, it's a boring filler name that every kid has". It's rude! Especially when an opinion on the middle name hasn't been sought.

shoopshoopdedoo · 07/08/2024 14:18

I like Evelyn Rose!

Not keen on hyphenated names but something like Henrietta (Etta) Rose would be lovely.

Theoldwoman · 07/08/2024 14:25

Ella Rose
Annabel Rose
Emily Rose
Estelle Rose
Julia Rose

FayCarew · 07/08/2024 14:41

Your nan probably isn't called Rose, May or Grace.

There were lots of Something John, Something Anne or Something Jane at school with me, and the middle names were often from parents or grandparents, but they still seem like filler names.

ButtonMoonBlanketSky · 07/08/2024 17:06

Madeleine Rose or Elizabeth Rose

resm · 07/08/2024 23:02

You seem to favour E names so how about the following, which all go with middle name Rose:

Eleanor
Emma
Estelle
Erin
Éadaoin (pr Aideen)
Eimear (pr Ee-mer)

Daisybuttercup12345 · 14/08/2024 22:51

Elizabeth Rose
Victoria Rose
Catherine Rose
Emily Rose
Emma Rose
Rosemary Elizabeth
Penelope Rose
Lydia Rose
Rosina Evelyn
Evelyn Rose
Harriet Rose
Henrietta Rose
Olivia Rose
