Baby boy name help please!

Hi,

I’m new to posting here normally just read old mumsnet threads about baby names for inspiration! Struggling to decide on a name for my little one. I have two boys already James and Billy (officially a William but we always call him Billy).

We normally struggle to find any names in common as he likes very traditional ‘royal’ type names (eg George, Henry, Louis, Max) and I like a mix of names but generally more unusual names (eg Bruno, Sylvan, Linden, Toby, Rhys, Oscar) so usually a compromise. My husband suggested Leo early on in the pregnancy and I really liked it as it’s his star sign and like the association with a lion so in my head he’s Leo. I also like the idea of a name ending in O (Leo, Ivo, Bruno, Roscoe).

But my husband is now less keen on Leo and has suggested one of the only other names we can agree on which is Robin. I’ve always liked Robin as I like the nature/bird association and it is a bit of a softer boys name and not that commonly used, and my husband likes that it’s an old name with history. The downside to Leo is that it is very popular right now which usually would annoy me but I’m actually okay with.

I also like the fact that Leo is short so there’s not much leeway for nicknames. Robin I like and wouldn’t mind if others called him Rob eventually but not keen on Robbie.

What do you think about the names Robin or Leo?

Thanks for listening to my ramblings!!

I really like Leo! What about Leopold (it's traditional for your hubs!). And Leo can be his nickname. I prefer Leo over Robin.

Leon is also similar and a lovely name (but not too overused?)

Genuinelyenquiring · 06/08/2024 20:14

I think they're both lovely.

PreggersWithBaby2 · 06/08/2024 20:15

I love love love the name Leo!
I'm not as mad about Robin but funnily enough I don't see it being shortened. The "in" is soft and quick to say (as opposed to Robert which is a more defined second syllable) so I don't think you need to worry about being called Rob or Robbie.

Leo is gorgeous! Robin is lovely too but has started to be used more frequently by girls, which puts me off slightly.

Or do you like Leon?

shoopshoopdedoo · 06/08/2024 20:48

Love Leo!
Robin is OK but I prefer Leo.

Firsttimebabymummy · 06/08/2024 20:50

I prefer Leo. As above, i know a little girl called Robin so view it as feminine.

BoleynMemories13 · 06/08/2024 20:59

I prefer Leo. Robin with William just makes me think of Robin Williams (lovely though he was). I know you say your William is Billy, but he might not always choose to be.

Alfred sprang to mind with the sibset for some reason.

mathanxiety · 06/08/2024 21:09

I thought of Robin Williams too.

How about Robert?
It's rarely used, and suits the style of James and William. You could still have the nickname Rob.

I like Leo, but it is very popular.

I also like
Henry
Duncan
Edward
Malcolm
Albert

(A combination of English and Scottish kings there).

KirstenBlest · 06/08/2024 22:24

Both are fine but will probably get called Lee or Rob.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/08/2024 23:15

Sorry I’m not sure I’ll be much help because I absolutely adore William and James (two of the top names on my boys list and I went for one of them) but find Leo a bit modern/trendy sounding in comparison and I personally would likely only use Robin as a traditional nn for Robert.

I’d guess that William and James would have a brother called Thomas, Edward, Samuel, Alexander etc. Having said that, I guess Leo would fit in with that group popularity wise in that they all are Top 100 names. And I must admit I do have a secret soft spot for Max and Ivo from your lists too, even if I’m not sure they are a match in style 🤔

theduchessofspork · 07/08/2024 00:38

I’d probably go for Robert nn Robin (which is how Robin is traditionally used for boys) as he may want a male rather than a unisex name when he’s older. I like Robin.

I wouldn’t use Leo as it’s overdone - and is so similar to the even more popular Theo.

Nicholas nn Nico could be an option?

Both Robin and Leo are handsome names.
They would probably get Rob and Leo.

Other ideas that could suit William (Billy) and James..

Leopold Robin - Leo
Christopher Leo - Chris
Richard Leo - Richo
David Charles - Dave
Charles Leo - Charley or Charleo
Hugo Robin
Alexander Robin - Alex

Not sure how to reply individually but interesting you mention the other traditional names like Alfred, Edward and Samuel for the sibset as my husband would love any of those.
