Hello,
im looking for some specific knowledge about girls names in Egypt (if you’re Egyptian please help!) I know there are some names that are used in Egypt that also work well in Europe such as Heidi and Sally. Is Julie/Julia used in Egypt? I’m looking for mixed names but not the usual Leila, Sophia, Maya etc.
thank you!

I'm not Egyptian but I think جوليا reads as Gulia not Julia in Egypt.
I'd pick a name and see if it works.

Do you want a western name that doesn't get mangled in Egyptian Arabic, or do you want an Arabic name that doesn't get mangled in English?

Some names don't transcribe well from English to Arabic, or from Arabic to English.

Probably not on your list but Sue works but Paula doesn't. (showing my age)

Not Egyptian but as KirstenBlest says, there is no specific letter for J in Arabic, the pronunciation of the letter jim varies in different dialects from a soft j like in the French word je to a hard g. It is a hard g in Egypt so anyone reading the name who is not familiar with it would pronounce it Goolia.

Other letters to avoid are p and v as they don’t exist in Arabic although there are actually letters borrowed from other alphabets sometimes used represent those sounds when transliterating foreign words/names, but, more commonly, the letters that sound like b and w are used so Paul ends up as Ball, Victoria as Wictoria.

A hard ch is another sound that doesn’t really exist so Charles doesn’t work but Charlotte (with a sh sound) does.

KirstenBlest · 01/08/2024 13:16

Yes, Paula doesn't work because there is no P and not really a 'au'.
Sue works because it would be Su/Soo (سو).

A lot of the names you'll be suggested will be of the Leila, Zara, Aisha types, but they seem a bit tired to me. Names that I can think that would work (e.g. Nadia, Samia) might be dated.

Does Salma work?
Cleo? Cleopatra?
Cleodora? Aziza?

I love Sally.

Most Egyptians would struggle with pronouncing the J in Julia.
Some ideas for you:
Hanna
Deena/Dina
Sara
Suzy
Yasmeen/Yasmin
Ruby (although there was a popstar called Ruby so that may not go down well if you have Egyptian family).
Farah could work as well.

Also Dalia. It was popular amongst my Egyptian dh's generation so we discounted it but it's a very nice name and easy for Arabic and English speakers.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 01/08/2024 15:07

There is definitely a letter in the Arabic alphabet that makes the j sound.

KirstenBlest · 01/08/2024 15:10

@ItsRainingTacos79 , if you mean jim, the pronunciation varies, and OP is asking specifically about Egyptian Arabic.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 01/08/2024 15:11

Lots of Arabic girls names beginning with J.

Jannah/Jana
Jasmin
Jamila

Plus plenty of Egyptian Jennys and Julies

ItsRainingTacos79 · 01/08/2024 15:12

@KirstenBlest ah I see. Did not know this

Jasmin is not an Arabic name. The Arabic version is Yasmeen. The Op is asking about names that work in Egypt. Yes there are some Arabic names which begin with J which would work eg Jaleela but the Op asked specifically about Julia and Egyptian Arabic speakers would struggle to pronounce it exactly right. My dh has a relative with the nickname Judy. His whole family is American educated but they still don't pronounce it correctly. It's best to avoid names like that.

I have never met an Egyptian Julie or Jenny.

KirstenBlest · 01/08/2024 15:44

@ItsRainingTacos79 , it's not obvious. If you've not heard it, I think in other North African countries it's more like the French j.
Are there really plenty of Egyptian Jennys and Julies?
The Jamilas I know are of Pakistani heritage and are elderly.

JSMill · 01/08/2024 15:50

Jameela (meaning beautiful) would be prounced Gameela in Egypt. I have never seen it being used as a name in Egypt.

Cecilly · 01/08/2024 16:47

I have a cousin who is half Egyptian and half Lebanese, and her name is Julie.

KirstenBlest · 01/08/2024 17:04

Levantine Arabic says jim as j/zh, I think. A friend from there has a name starting with J as does her sibling. I think she has some French heritage

JosieK8 · 01/08/2024 20:45

Thank you everyone, very informative
