Felix

What do you think of the name Felix? Too popular? Will it date? I've always been very resistant to top hundred names, but my husband hates most of my name choices, so Felix is on the table. I know that popular names are much less popular (only 46% of boys had a top hundred name in 2022 vs 73% in 1996), and it's only 733 boys, which across all of England and Wales feels like nothing.

I really like it but I wouldn't use it due to the cat association. I've only ever known one and he did get a lot of 'banter' about his name at secondary school unfortunately.

Cat and cat food.

Felix
Babychewtoy · 29/07/2024 03:03

I’ve met 2 baby / child Felixes and neither of them are cats.

I really like it, but then both my children have names that are apparently for dogs (also top 100). No-one has said anything negative about them in real life.

Cat and cat food.

Exactly it's current type of cat food

Habbyhadno · 29/07/2024 03:12

I have a Felix and it's still my fave boy name, go for it! It's quite a popular name where I live.

sashh · 29/07/2024 06:12

Cat food brand.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/07/2024 06:30

Great name

Apollo365 · 29/07/2024 06:49

It’s cute but it’s also cat food

Mummysaf · 29/07/2024 06:52

It’s too cat like for me ,possibly because of the cat food brand.

how about Otis or something similar x

Flatandhappy · 29/07/2024 06:53

Milo and Otis? Weren’t they dogs?

Calliopespa · 29/07/2024 07:01

I think the problem with the cat thing is it isn’t just the cat food association; it’s reinforced by being reminiscent of feline.

Iasonnas · 29/07/2024 07:27

"As for the cat comments that silly, we had a dog called trudy but I went to school with a trudy too"

Was her brother called Pedigree Chum? If not then that's completely irrelevant

To your face maybe. But the OP didn't ask what we would say to a parent of a child called Felix. She asked what we think. There's a huge difference.

Trust me, if your kids are Luna and Rex then people have thought "dog names".

This!

Apollo365 · 29/07/2024 07:44

Someone I know had a kid called Rufus and it’s all I could think about. Not once have I ever voiced this as I’m not a dick.

yikesanotherbooboo · 29/07/2024 08:08

Is it very popular? I don't see many little ones. I like it because I like the meaning and there is a slight early 20 th century raffishness that appeals. DH didn't like it so it was off our list.

Yes … though do you pronounce it Ruff- us?! I know a Rufus and the MIL calls him Ruff-us. I’m always wondering if she’s trying to make a dog point but she’s Nordic so it might be a language thing.

That's a lift company.

Oh yes!

haveatye · 29/07/2024 08:58

I have a Felix. I'm sure my family thought of the cat link when he was born but nobody ever said anything.

To me it means happiness, it is not too pompous and not 100% tied to a particular social group, can be pronounced and recognised by people in lots of different countries.

Tbh you can have any business start up with any name, there's a business that uses my name that sprung up in the last few years. You could call him the most innocuous or unusual name then that's the latest condom brand/popstar/prime minister. That's life.

Yes. This is all true.

If I had a porridge brand I’d call it Otis with a picture of a cheeky little boy and his bowl of porridge.
