I have a DS called Alfred and love the name another name I really love is Wilfred but I'm not sure if it's too similar as close friend said it sounds like twins. Would it sound too close if I l used Wilfred with Alfred?

Other names we like is Henry but not sure if it's too ordinary.

They do both lend themselves to Freddie as a NN so that could cause a problem. However does Alfred already have an established NN Al or Alfie for example if so I don’t see the issue.
Henry is fine with Alfred. I think it goes better that Wilfred. It’s in the same name camp but they sound totally different.

Other ideas to compliment Alfred.
Peter. George. Oscar. Vincent, William. Oswald. Raymond.

I think Alfred and Wilfred are too similar unless you call them Alfie and wilf from the start.

henry is great

Sudename · 28/07/2024 21:25

Edward would go nice

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 28/07/2024 21:29

I know an Alfred and his brother is Arthur.

manonwelfling · 28/07/2024 21:31

I absolutely love Alfred! Alfred and Wilfred are a little too close imo. Henri is always nice. Alfred and Aristides (Ari)?

owladventure · 28/07/2024 21:33

Alfred and Wilfred are too matchy matchy.

Unless you're french, don't use Henri.

Henry and Alfred are fine. Alfred is pretty ordinary too.

Alfred and Wilfred are too similar.
Alfred and Henry are great together.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 28/07/2024 23:55

I think Alfred and Wilfred are too similar unless one is going to be Alfie/Will/one or them Fred and the other a nickname from their version.

I think they're too similar yes. Henry is a good strong name though.
Or I immediately thought Alfred and George

BoleynMemories13 · 29/07/2024 09:12

Way too similar I'm afraid, as both can shorten to Fred(die). You're basically limiting them from ever using one of the potential shortenings of their name for life. Alfie and Will/Wilf are fine together, but giving them the full names AlFRED and WilFRED is too much.

It would be like having Edward and Theodore, where both could be Teddy, or Henry and Harrison, where both could be Harry. Isabelle and Annabelle for girl etc. There are just some names that shouldn't be used together I'm afraid.

William works nicely instead. Henry also works well.

Or alternatively, what about Alfred and:-

Stanley
Sidney
Edward
Ernest
Vincent
Leonard

All 'old man names' which can give a cutesy short form, in a similar style to Alfred (and indeed Wilfred).

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/07/2024 10:46

I think it depends if Alfred and Wilfred would be known as Alfie and Wilf? If so, then it wouldn’t really matter as they’d rarely use their full names together. Or do you like Stanley?

I love the name Alfred. It goes back a long way in my family - grandfather, great grandfather and further back to 1830's. Their brothers were Frank, Stanley, Arnold, Harold, William, James and Elliot. So nice to see these old names coming back.

DixiePeach · 01/08/2024 19:57

Barnaby then they could be Alfie and barny

Useruserdoubleuser · 01/08/2024 20:03

Yes too similar. For old English classic how about Alfred and John?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/08/2024 22:47

Tricky one - I mean I think Alfred and Wilfred do sound different enough not to be confused for each other when shouted and plenty of people do use sibling names with the same ending sound (so I doubt many people would comment in RL); but yes, it might be slightly awkward if they both want to use Fred/Freddie as a nn when older…

But I really don’t think Henry (or indeed William?) are too ordinary to sound odd with Alfred, not when Alfred is becoming popular too and climbing - plus there’s the obvious historical King link as well. 10 or 20 years ago when there were less young Alfred’s/Alfies about, maybe then it would have been a more unusual pairing.
