Out of interest? I like the name but hear variations in pronunciation.

Also the infamous "draws" for "[chest of] drawers"

I would pronounce it My-a. I worked with someone who pronounced it Moya.

Brummie? Small brummie nephew tells us “these toys are moyn” when we visit.

We have three across (very) extended family. Two My-a, one May-a.

Maya to rhyme with papaya is the Asian way.

Best rhyme in the whole thread!

Izzynohopanda · 28/07/2024 14:54

Off to Google what non rhotic accent is..,

Moonlaserbearwolf · 28/07/2024 15:21

I know a few Mayas and only one for them pronounces it May-a. I’m sure My-a is the more common pronunciation, but my brain always wants to say May-a.
I find it a most frustrating name as I always have to think before pronouncing it, in case I get it wrong!

acrossthebay · 28/07/2024 12:06

Yeah I’d have said Maya rhyming with player too but I’ve heard the rhyming with fire one too.

I used to, but both the Mayas I know pronounce it Mya

Birdsongsinging · 28/07/2024 15:24

May-a as in month of may

Clueless2024 · 28/07/2024 15:28

Maya & Mya are two different names!

May, as in the month of May with an A on the end

My, as is "my" with an A on the end.

Don't you just love a thread that turns into snobbery over accents? Why do some people always assume their accent is 'correct pronunciation' and others are wrong? Why can't we just accept that people pronounce things differently?

Maybe some people need to google 'schwa' to understand a bit better that not ever sound in a word needs to be stressed! Just because some accents stress certain sounds, not all do. For example, a and er will both come out as 'uh' in many accents, whereas others will stress them so you can hear a difference. It's so petty to belittle others who might pronounce those sounds the same, as if they're wrong or stupid for doing so 🙄.

As for the name in question, I would always check rather than assume pronunciation if I saw this name written down as I've known it to be both May-ah or My-ah. I instinctively read it in my head as May-ah, but understand that My-ah is the most common pronunciation globally.

It's just one of those names I guess, like Evelyn, Esme, Sara etc.

Well said!!!

Frlrlrubert · 28/07/2024 16:02

I'd assume:

Maya = May-a
Mya = My-a
Mia = Mee-a

But having taught many, they tend to be spelled and pronounced pretty much interchangeably.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 28/07/2024 16:20

May -a

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/07/2024 17:41

My-a in our family but I have come across May-a .

Crazycat53 · 28/07/2024 17:42

May a

ginasevern · 28/07/2024 17:55

I'd pronounce as Maya Jama does - so My-a. I believe it's of Indian origin.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/07/2024 12:32

Many English people don't (can't?) say r at the end of a word, so player is "playah" and fire is "fie-ah". I used to consider it a speech defect but I have got used to it since coming here from Ireland and being told that water should be pronounced "wauh-tah" (no thank you).

That’s very odd!

Maelil01 · 28/07/2024 19:24

WhatHoJeeves · 28/07/2024 12:31

How do the endings of player and Maya pronounced my-uh not sound the same? Honest question as they sound the same to me when I say them!

I’d have thought this was a joke but a couple of people have informed my that some English people are unable to pronounce “-er”.
For the rest of us the r is very clearly sounded!
Put it into an online dictionary that says the words and see if you can hear the difference!

Walkthelakes · 28/07/2024 19:32

I have a Maya pronounced May-ah. I knew when I named her it there were pronunciation issues but I loved that it was an international name with lots of different meanings and pronunciations. I think of My-ah as thr asian way as Maya in Sanskrit means illusion. I named her after Maya/Maia the Roman goddess of spring and new beginnings. She does get a mix when first starting classes etc but ur quickly settles down to the right pronunciation. I don’t mind that but it wouldn’t be the right name for you if they would bother you

Apollo365 · 28/07/2024 19:38

Maya is May-uh
Mya is - My-uh

Walkthelakes · 28/07/2024 19:39

Just to add I have no regrets of calling her Maya. I still love the name for all the same reasons and she has grown up to be such a lovely girl—the name suits her. She’s full
of flowers and sunlight and easy going

TwigletsAndRadishes · 28/07/2024 19:40

My-a

ThePoshUns · 28/07/2024 19:46

My-uh

Jennyathemall · 28/07/2024 19:50

acrossthebay · 28/07/2024 12:06

Yeah I’d have said Maya rhyming with player too but I’ve heard the rhyming with fire one too.

Yup my daughter has two toy meerkats called Maya and Maya, each pronounced differently as above.

Fontainebleau007 · 28/07/2024 19:51

May-a

MadameMassiveSalad · 28/07/2024 19:52

Rhymes with Fire.🔥

RightOnTheEdge · 28/07/2024 19:52

Maelil01 · 28/07/2024 12:18

How on earth could Maya rhyme with player?
-er isn’t pronounced the same as -a!

Maya, pronounced May-a, and player rhyme when I say them.
May-uh
Play-uh
