I'm having my second baby next Friday and we're still torn on names! We are expecting a little girl and are currently stuck between;

Etta
Ottilie

Which do you prefer?

We've looked through thousands of names and these are the only two myself and OH can agree on! We both have a preference but I'm interested in other people's thoughts!

Many thanks xx

I love etta but they're both nice

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/07/2024 13:26

Etta 😊

Malahide · 26/07/2024 13:30

Neither - both scream MN/influencer trend and will soon be dated if I’m honest.

Etta is just a nickname and Ottilie is absolutely everywhere.

HowIrresponsible · 26/07/2024 13:35

Neither

Etta doesn't sound like a name and Ottilie is so overused

DramaAlpaca · 26/07/2024 13:39

I'm not that keen on either, I'm sorry. The 'tt' sound in both is harsh to my ears.

I wouldn't mind Etta if it was a diminutive - for Harriet or Henrietta or Juliette for example, but it looks a bit incomplete on its own.

Ottilie is very of its time and will date badly I think.

MistyHazelFox · 26/07/2024 13:40

I like Ottilie, but I think it might be seen as 'posh' name - it was 1st among babies which birth was reported in Times one year. It was on my list a years back and I would pick this over Etta if this two are my only choice.

I'm not keen on Etta because I can only see this name as nickname and I find like naming your child Etta is like taking name as Rosetta and Marietta and using uglier part of name. Not bad objectively, just not my thing.

Butterflyfern · 26/07/2024 13:43

They're both objectively fine names.

But I don't think this thread is going to be helpful for you choosing, as choosing a name is so subjective, and everyone likes to pick apart other's choices.

Why not just wait until she's born and see what you think suits/sticks?

Is it truly posh though. Or just Nouveau Posh.

If you look at the royal family - Elizabeth, Anne, Charlotte, Alexandra, Alice, Mary, Louise, are type of names they choose. Even Eugenie was too out there for them.

Ottilie is better than Etta which sounds as if half the name is missing.

But no need to choose now. A baby doesnt need to have a name chosen before birth.

WetBandits · 26/07/2024 16:43

Etta is lovely. Ottilie is very faddy amongst wannabe influencers.

MumChp · 26/07/2024 16:45

Dont like them a lot but would go with Ottilie (maybe Ottilia).

SossijRoll · 26/07/2024 17:10

Neither, Etta is just ugly and seems like half a name. Like Julietta or Marietta, and Ottilie is just faddy and will date.

If I was forced to chose then Ottilie.

JimNast · 26/07/2024 17:36

Of the two, Etta. Ottilie sounds awful in some accents.
Greta is nice.

Came to say this!

Although I really like Violetta too with Etta as a nn and can go by Violet if they want when older too.

Mumofgirls2017 · 26/07/2024 18:03

Both nice but marginally Etta. Maybe see what she looks like?

Definitely nouveau riche!

Choose when the child is here.

Ottilie is utterly fashionable but sweet.

Etta could be a nick name for..
Mietta
Harriette
Cosette
Claudette
Georgette

Do you like ..
Dorit
Fotini
Grace
Julia
Alexandra
Zena
Clotilde
Maxima

Nicebloomers · 27/07/2024 16:46

Love Ottilie. Etta is sweet but I tend to prefer a longer name for options. Mietta is a pretty option, but there are lots you could choose that would shorten to Etta.

HowIrresponsible · 27/07/2024 16:46

I know a Henrietta who was Het or Hetty.

Etta would work as a nn for that too.

miniaturepixieonacid · 27/07/2024 19:33

Etta

VenusClapTrap · 28/07/2024 12:27

I like Ottilie. How about Ottoline?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 28/07/2024 12:34

Of the 2 definitely Ottilie. Etta seems very much like a nn (plus sounds like “(I) ate her” in some accents).

Georgie743 · 28/07/2024 12:36

Etta is a fabulous name

Normallynumb · 28/07/2024 12:48

The( adult) Etta I know is actually Henrietta
Ottilie is a new " Trendy" name so personally I would rethink

Liv999 · 28/07/2024 18:58

Sorry OP but neither, Ottilie reminds me of otter and is really ugly imo, and Etta is incomplete
