Looking for a Cornish connection and really like Ruan for a boy - but obviously sounds a lot like "ruin". Would you avoid?

There is an Irish name spelled differently but pronounced the same and it is very popular over here at least. Ruadhan or a variation of letters cos we Irish love to make things more complicated lol I like it.

😂
bold corner for you

I adore Ruan. I thought it was Irish for 'red'? Whatever the origin, it's lovely.

RogueFemale · 20/07/2024 23:28

Ruan is sort of ok but I think you can do better.

UltramarineViolet · 20/07/2024 23:29

It's not a name I have come across before but I really like it

I assume it is pronounced as it looks? Roo-ann?

bumblenbean · 20/07/2024 23:38

My (Irish) nephew is Ruan- pronounced roo-un. It wouldn’t be my choice but I like it!

Rua is Irish for red.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/07/2024 05:58

I like it.
i would say it as roo-un so don’t think you need to be worried about it being like ruin

Needanewname42 · 21/07/2024 06:05

Too close to Ruin for comfort. I'd pick something else.

IfYouEscapeTheLionsDenDontGoBackForYourHat · 21/07/2024 06:08

Ruan yes that's a normal enough name in ireland, more lerrs in the middle though.
Maybe ruadhan... I like it. Scottish have a version too.

GoldFrame · 21/07/2024 06:14

DD had a boy in her class called this and we did refer to him as Mother’s 😳

pictoosh · 21/07/2024 06:39

Ruan...nah. It's a nice name but will be misinterpreted as 'ruin' over and over again. People are too stupid and lacking in scope to cope with it.

pictoosh · 21/07/2024 07:24

What about Rohan instead? I know one and think it's a fab name.
It's a gaelic variant of Rowan apparently.

People are too stupid? Charming!
Pick a name that's easily pronounced or accept having to correct people forever.

MiddleagedBeachbum · 21/07/2024 07:48

It’s a beautiful name

Every Rohan I have ever met has been Indian.

isthismylifenow · 21/07/2024 07:50

It's a very popular name where I live. I didn't know it was Irish though (I'm not in Ireland).

We pronounce it as Roo-ahn.

TheNinjaWife · 21/07/2024 07:54

This is quite a popular name in South Africa, and the only place I have come across it. I’ve never associated it with ruin.

Coffeeandcakemum · 21/07/2024 21:52

I think it's a nice name 😊

If you want a boys names with a Cornish connection some others are Jago, Jory, Jowan, Lowen & Perran.

Bristolnewcomer · 21/07/2024 21:57

I think it’s lovely but I am from cornwall so biased.

As well as the list above I like Carn and Sennen, and Morgan.

RunningOnHope · 22/07/2024 09:52

Thanks everyone, think we'll keep it in the running!
