Hello!
We're due our DS VERY soon, and would love to give him a Danish/Scandinavian name to match our heritage.
Can anyone recommend some ideas?
At the moment, we like Esben, Kasper and Ansel - any tho

Love Magnus but English people pronounce it so wrong 😅

Magnus has been used as a name in Scotland as long as it's been used in Denmark. I could easily say the Danish pronounce it 'so wrong' because you don't use the medieval Latin pronounciation but I wouldn't because I'm not an arse. Different languages have different ways of pronouncing the same name.

Asker!

Bacon?

I know a Leif and he always has to correct the pronunciation and spelling of his name in the UK.

I like Erik, Lars or Olaf.

There were a couple of Danish families when I was at school, the boys were called Henrik and Jens. Jens sounded a really unusual name to us but I think it was one of the more popular baby names in Denmark at the time

FayCarew · 19/07/2024 17:44

Kaprul

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/07/2024 19:35

PS I'd avoid Bent and Gorm.

No.

I like Kasper a lot.

I really like Soren, Henrik and Kristian too.

Ansel sounds like Hansel spoken by someone who drops their Hs...

EducatingArti · 19/07/2024 20:23

Not Mads if you are in an English speaking country for obvious reasons
Valdemar sounds too much like Voldemort for me!

FayCarew · 19/07/2024 20:37

@MumChp , reverse the letters Wink

AnnaMagnani · 19/07/2024 20:37

How important is it to you that the name is 1) pronounced and 2) spelled correctly?

Bearing in mind it is more likely that both will happen for a child but not remotely likely when they are an adult.

My parents tried really really hard to pick a Danish name for me that worked in English. By my mid-20s I no longer corrected the 'wrong' pronunciation and would accept any spelling.

Even my best friend says my name wrong.

My DM nearly cried with happiness when she met someone who saw her name written down and pronounced it correctly, it's such a rare event.

Nah, I think after Mads Mikkelsen became famous, a lot of the English speaking world knows that you don’t pronounce the D. It’s a really nice name imo, popular in Germany as well as Scandinavia and the Netherlands.

Or OP you could consider Viggo, like the other big name acting export? I also like Erik, Soren, Elias (I think most would get the soft E after being told once?), Magnus and Marius from the popular Danish boys lists. Or stick with William, Alexander, Adam etc which are very cross cultural?

Jonas is lovely
