Pip for a boy...

Probably just hormonal, but have been calling my bump Pipsqueak, as it'll be the last of four. If I get too attached to it (the name, not the baby, obviously!), what could it be shortened from other than Phillip?
Although on hearing my explanation for Pip, dd1 has sworn to call it Runt....

LaidbackinEngland · 11/04/2008 21:27

pippin ?

itsazoohere · 11/04/2008 21:28

Well, my dog's called Sprout, so I suppose I'd be following a trend!

Just call him Pip!

My godmother's daughter is called Pippa and unbelievably, she married a man called Pip...

peasholme · 11/04/2008 21:30

I think it's lovely.
But have you been listening to The Archers? That prompted a "pipsqueak" phase in me, against by better judgement.

Dragonbutter · 11/04/2008 21:30

There's a pip at DS's nursery.
I don't think it's short for anything as they would probably put the full name on his coat hook.

itsazoohere · 11/04/2008 21:31

And did my question make sense, I'm looking for a 'proper' name that could be abbreviated TO Pip, noyt a nickname yhat could come FROM Pip.

I love it - it's really sweet and unusual but not stupid (imho)! But Pippin is a Hobbit's name, if that bothers you at all! And of course Pip is from Dickens if you hapen to like Dickens, which I don't.

Cool name though!

janeite · 11/04/2008 21:32

happen not hapen

peasholme · 11/04/2008 21:32

should clarify: love pip, pippin, pipsqueak, but Do Not Love David Archer, who uses said dimunitives for his teenaged daughter in T' Archers

MerlinsBeard · 11/04/2008 21:33

the first thing i thught of was phillip

then pippin but realised that thats auntie mables dog

thought of phillippa but read that you were having a boy.......

SoMuchToBits · 11/04/2008 21:33

Seriously, can you not call him Philip on the birth certificate, but always use Pip, then when he grows up if he prefers Philip, he could use it?

Friend of mine has done that with Toby - he is Tobias officially but always known as Toby.

gigglewitch · 11/04/2008 21:34

call it pip as a middle name???
so it isn't a pippA, then?
Make PIP its initials ha ha then you have to think of three names. OK bad suggestion

gigglewitch · 11/04/2008 21:36

Philopilus

itsazoohere · 11/04/2008 21:36

We already have a Phillip in the family, although he's called Billy . My dd3 has a bizzare fairly hippy name that we shorten to a much more 'normal' name, so have kind of done it the other way round there.

its short for philip

FYIAD · 11/04/2008 21:39

i like it because of Great Expectations

but it is very unmanly

susiecutiebananas · 11/04/2008 21:42

I just think you can call him Pip. Its fine! Its a boys name too. so, just go with Pip! Is it def a boy then?

FYIAD · 11/04/2008 21:43

Imagine on his wedding day

poor bastard dont do it

petetong · 11/04/2008 21:55

OMG, don't call him pip. It is very feminine. If you need to call him Phillip and shorten it to Pip if he doesn't kill you and Phill if he likes it.

collision · 11/04/2008 22:00

its awful

My friend has a dog called Pip. Would also be a good name for a guinea pig.

nell12 · 11/04/2008 22:15

My nephew was Philip, shortened to Pip (as in Great Expectations) until he turned 11 when he announced he wanted to be known as Phil from now on He is 21 now and we still call him Pip from time to time, just to traumatise him
