Tory-Girl Aesthetic Names

Tongue in cheek title as my colleague joked I ĺiked "Tory" names. Anyway, we're down to the last three - I have a strong favourite, DH has a strong favourite and the third is more of a compromise. So interesting to see what the consensus here is! If it helps, (potential) DD most likely won't be going to state in case there are any comments about potential bullying...

Henrietta is a beautiful name as is Gwendoline/Gwendolyn, I personally prefer the latter spelling.
Cressida I'm not a fan of at all

gravitytester · 13/07/2024 18:59

This just makes me think of the scene in Chalet Girl where they show each girl and the names end in '-ella' 😂

jackstini · 13/07/2024 18:59

Fenella
Allegra
Georgiana
Theodora
Seraphina
Octavia
Portia
Lucinda
Natasha

Just realised they all end in 'a'

Be prepared for people to let you know bullying can be much worse in private school than state!

jackstini · 13/07/2024 19:00

@gravitytester - crossed posts but my list fits your comment quite well 🤣

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 13/07/2024 19:12

The other end of the spectrum are the rather safe and sound names: Anne, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary

I think Allegra mentioned above is the Toriest of Tory-Girl names.

Cecilia
Gillian
Claire
Penelope
Helena
Beatrix
Arabella
Natasha

I like the Gwendolen spelling - in addition to being the original Welsh spelling (I think?) it also seems the most intuitive to pronounce. I like Cressida too. Not really fan of -etta or -ette names, which feel maybe a little bit old fashioned at the moment, but Henrietta does have some nice short forms.

I would not have thought of your choices as "Tory" necessarily - of the two Cressidas I know IRL, one (generally known as Cress) had socialist activist parents and the other came from a noticeably apolitical family.

Oh God, yeah I know. I meant bullying over a frilly name. Georgiana got knocked out for us around top 10 in our baby name deathmatches I think...

Artemis

Firsttimebabymummy · 13/07/2024 19:26

I voted Hentrietta.
Also like Harriet.

I know of one each.

I don't like Cressida.. Gwen is OK too but prefer Henrietta

MavisPennies · 13/07/2024 19:29

Cressida makes me think of Cressida Dick.

For full posh girl styles she should have a really daft nickname like Pooh or Bunny

KevinDeBrioche · 13/07/2024 19:31

Camilla
Caroline
Elizabeth

If it helps I’m a Chav from a council estate, and I like all three of your options 🤷‍♀️

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 13/07/2024 21:35

Fuckwitella just reeks of tory.

Rockmehardplace · 13/07/2024 23:01

I can’t pick a favourite. Dislike all of them equally.

id choose Cressida at a push.

StSwithinsDay · 13/07/2024 23:02

Friends of dd's who went to private schools :
Beanie
Winnie
Florrie
Lizzie
Dodie

User6761 · 13/07/2024 23:17

Love Gwen, although not so keen on Gwendoline - but I prefer shorter names. Gwenan is nice as an alternative.

Also like Etta. Not keen on Cressida at all.

RogueFemale · 14/07/2024 01:10

Can't vote for any of the three, all awful.

Suggest Venetia or Sibylla. Lovely posh names and are not on the ONS latest list of baby names.

P.S. Sibylla is pronounced Si-BILL- a.

LiterallyOnFire · 14/07/2024 01:21

Oh good. My names in there. I don't want anything to do with a "Tory girl aesthetic". Bleurgh.

Just give her a standard name and call her Tiggy.

KirstenBlest · 14/07/2024 17:35

Margaret

Jemimapinotduck · 14/07/2024 18:17

Only like Gwendoline, the others, in particular Cressida are awful sorry

Ribenaberry12 · 14/07/2024 18:42

Tory-est girls I know are Cordelia (Cord), Victoria (Vix) and Harriet (Hatty).

Agree, I actually think it’s the more woke, arty farty types that choose the more ‘out there’ names. True Tories would be more bog standard Charlottes, Williams etc
