Does Harlan or Harland sound like an American or British name?

American 100%

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/07/2024 22:04

I picture it on both American and British kids.

SausageRoll2020 · 10/07/2024 22:04

It sounds like something a Man City fan would consider 😂

Houseplanter · 10/07/2024 22:05

Harlan makes me think of horror stories and Harland sounds made up

YouveGotAFastCar · 10/07/2024 22:06

Haaland, if I’m very honest. I’d have thought it was Premier League/Man City inspired.

amyshep · 10/07/2024 22:08

There's an awful bully at my kids school with that name.
Thick as mince too

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 10/07/2024 22:09

Man City fan?

What about Grealish as an alternative?

VladimirVsVolodymyr · 10/07/2024 22:10

Harlan I would think American, while Haarland will be scandi like the Man City player.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 10/07/2024 22:10

Harlan sounds American. Harland sounds like something made up that a tween would dream of calling a future child.

LaPalmaLlama · 10/07/2024 22:11

Harland sounds like a container port in the Netherlands, so neither

Håland/ Haaland is pronounced 'horland' in Scandinavia

NashvilleQueen · 10/07/2024 22:12

If you're in the UK everyone will assume it's named after Erling Haaland.

strawberryicescream · 10/07/2024 22:12

Never heard of either of those names! Harland sounds like it would be a debt recovery service, repayment plans etc.. (sorry OP!)

StSwithinsDay · 10/07/2024 22:14

Harland and Wollf was a famous ship building company in Belfast.

This.

KezzaMucklowe · 10/07/2024 22:17

I would think you're a city fan.
As names go it's the football equivalent of Khaleesi.

PossumintheHouse · 10/07/2024 22:19

Both sound like the name of a furniture store.

Subfusc · 10/07/2024 22:20

American and hick. At least, those are the kind of characters I’ve seen called Harlan/d in contemporary US fiction.

NoDishiRishi · 10/07/2024 22:22

Only if you have another called Foden or Ederson ⚽️

MirandaBlu · 10/07/2024 22:22

For what it's worth, I'm Scottish but live in the USA. I'm not a stranger to the culture as my mother is American.

When I lived in San Francisco, I once got a series of phone calls from someone who claimed he as "calling about a Harlan". As I lived alone at the time, I told him there was no Harlan living here and he must have the wrong number. As things persisted, it turned out he was calling about a "hauling" - apparently my number was similar to the number of someone who had called his company to come and take away loads of rubbish.

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/07/2024 05:56

American

My first thought too.

ToffeenutLatte · 11/07/2024 06:46

Harlan makes me think of the writer Harlan Coben who I believe is American.

I've only ever heard of Harland as a surname here in the UK.

sanityisamyth · 11/07/2024 06:48

There both awful.

Jessieshome · 11/07/2024 12:22

It sounds like a Norwegian footballer's name.
