Poppy or Ivy

Long awaited rainbow baby girl on the way. I can’t decide between two names- Poppy or Ivy. I know cutesy names aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but please be kind.

Poppy was my favourite for a long time (I’ve been doing IVF for years). Then I was slightly put off because it seems to be a very popular pet name. But my mum and sister LOVE it - this is their pick, which is making me re-think. I’ve also seen Poppy get a lot of hate on Mumsnet for some reason.

Ivy was a new favourite. Maybe it’s a little fresher than Poppy as Poppy has been popular for a while but Ivy seems to have more recently become cool. It was going to be Ivy in my mind and I had already started calling her Ivy when talking to my bump. But now I’ve discussed it with people and they all prefer Poppy - I’m confused.

What do people think? ☺️

Honestly....you've waited a long time for this. Go with what YOU want and don't make the mistake of asking for opinions in real life. If you get an "I don't like...." from someone it might put you off the name, or an "I prefer...." from a close relative might mean that you end up choosing what they want instead of what you want! You will get a mix of opinions, probably 50/50....

Both good names!

Aglassaday · 10/07/2024 17:31

This is SO hard OP both are gorgeous can feel the pain of picking one. Mega congratulations on your rainbow baby❤️

Do you have a middle name planned and if so could always add Poppy/Ivy after and have two middle names

Twiglets1 · 10/07/2024 17:32

Poison Ivy comes to mind - not a great name

This.

Poppy is beautiful (so is Ivy) but out of the two Poppy is my fave - congratulations on your rainbow baby x

Idarosetta · 10/07/2024 17:40

Really not keen on Ivy - awful plant! Also reminds me of an IV drip… in its sound? But that’s just me.

Poppy really lovely.

Congratulations 🌈

ReginaPhalange12 · 10/07/2024 17:46

Congratulations on your rainbow baby 🌈

Both are lovely names. We were going to call our DD Poppy but when she was born she didn't suit it so we called her something else. If you're having trouble deciding maybe wait & see how you feel once she is born?

msmatcha · 10/07/2024 17:49

Both are really lovely. But when you meet her you might decide on something completely different!

Bathbombin · 10/07/2024 17:50

I love the name Ivy. Poppy is great too, but much more common - and Poppies are poisonous too, aren’t they?

Spinachandcheese · 10/07/2024 17:50

Both pleasant enough. Ivy seems darker despite the opium connotations of poppy. Whatever floats your boat.

Soozikinzii · 10/07/2024 17:51

My niece now 35 is called Poppy and I think she still likes here name so that's a good indication ! My mum (so her gma) did want her to be called Peneope and shortened to Poppy in case she got a top job . Which she definitely has done - but she seems OK with just Poppy !

Berlinlover · 10/07/2024 17:56

Definitely Poppy, Ivy really isn’t a nice name.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 10/07/2024 18:03

100% poppy!

Firsttimebabymummy · 10/07/2024 18:16

I much prefer Poppy. It's beautiful

Ivy isn't a nice plant.

bellocchild · 10/07/2024 18:17

Nothing wrong with Ivy, but it still seems like an old-lady name.

Catopia · 10/07/2024 18:25

If it's a November baby, I would give some weight to Poppy for that.
I think going in with two potential names is fine, and even having some time after the birth where you try them out. Afterall, naming your daughter is something to take seriously as unless they take affirmative steps that's their name for life! When you meet them, the decision about which feels right may make itself clear.

In terms of using both, the result may be a bit... botanical.... You could go with something like Poppy Isla, which would have a similar sound, or something like Ivy Penelope (or any other P name to be honest), and still leave Poppy available as a pet name at home.

My impression overall is that Poppy is more girly - I think it's cute up to end of teenage years but not sure where it goes after that. Ivy I still see quite old-fashioned even though it is part of this name renaissance where lots of "old people names" are making a comeback.

As a firstname, Poppy does have the ability for a pet name at home (Pops, Popsie etc), where as you have nowhere to go from Ivy really for a nickname.

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 10/07/2024 18:43

Honestly? I’m not a fan of either as they are too twee and cutesy but both are massively popular. Ivy blends in with all the Avas and Evies. And both seem to always be paired with the filler middle names of Rose/Grace/May which are done to death.

I’d choose Poppy if I had to. See what she looks like when she arrives, you might choose something completely different.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/07/2024 18:52

Poppy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I love old lady names!! Especially those from the WWII era, just think those women were so incredible.

Congratulations OP! For my 2c, I love Ivy ❤️

Sosleepyy · 10/07/2024 18:59

I really like Ivy! My preference. But agree with PP. Go for what YOU love, don’t overthink it.

greencatbob · 10/07/2024 19:16

Poppy.

Ivy is 'common'.

dollopz · 10/07/2024 19:17

Love Ivy.

Dislike poppy immensely.

however you need to opt for a name YOU like. Ignore your family pressure to call her poppy, they had/have their own chance at naming their own babies.

dollopz · 10/07/2024 19:18

Poppy is too popular and common

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/07/2024 19:24

I love both and couldn’t choose! So I asked my daughter and she said Poppy, so I went for that!

AmyandPhilipfan · 10/07/2024 19:33

I know a child Ivy and an adult Poppy. I've never thought of Poison Ivy or anything else when addressing the child. I think it sounds nice and it suits her. I can imagine calling her Ivy as an adult.

The Poppy I know I don't think I've actually ever said her name to her. Because to me it totally doesn't suit her. It doesn't sound like an adult name. I like it in theory, but actually knowing an adult called Poppy seems wrong!
