Wavering on our boys name!

Flopsy145 · 06/07/2024 22:03

I'm almost 39 weeks so getting close now and for months we've been set on Eddie. Everyone, DH, DD etc are all quite set and have been referring to him as Eddie. I do still love it but I'm having second thoughts as I don't feel 100% like I did with my DD.
Other names I'm thinking about are Archie and Alfie, I'm a fan of the ie/y names and our last name is Smith so very common. My DDs name is not common so I like it with Smith, but I don't know if that's why I'm wavering on Eddie.
I also dislike the nn's for Eddie and some family members have already referred to him Ted or Teddy or Ed and that bothers me 😂
Any advice? ❤️

Edward, then they'll shorten to Eddie.
If Eddie they'll shorten further, if that makes sense?
I love both these names, much prefer to archie or alfie

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/07/2024 22:08

Eddie is great, my favourite of your name ideas (I would put Edward on the bc personally)

greenblueredyellowviolet · 06/07/2024 22:11

Tbh I think with the surname Smith there's a lot to be said for a more uncommon first name - more uncommon than Archie, Alfie, and Edward! I'd listen to your instinct x

Comedycook · 06/07/2024 22:13

Eddie is nice but I'd go for Edward on the BC... Edward is a classic. Archie and Alfie are a bit dated now imo...v popular a few years ago.

Other names that end in IE/ee sound

Charlie
Jamie
Louis
Frankie

longdistanceclaraclara · 06/07/2024 22:15

Edward. Will naturally become Eddie or Ed.

Barleysugar86 · 06/07/2024 22:15

I would definitely go Edward for the birth cert, but Eddie would be as a nn cute I think. Archie for me is very Meghan Markle and Harry.

Agree on the more uncommon name idea with Smith, but I think you can cover that off fine with a slightly less common middle name.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 06/07/2024 22:18

If you don’t feel 100%, then think of other names.

My DD2 was going to be Theodore if she was a boy and I was sad not to get to use it at the time. However, when I was pregnant with DS, I just didn’t feel right with Theodore. It didn’t ’fit’ with DD1 and 2’s names because it was much longer and not Irish like theirs. I found a new name that I love and I’m so glad I didn’t go with the name I wasn’t sure on.

Pumpkindoodles · 06/07/2024 22:35

I like Edward better than Eddie for bc
or Edmund? Edmund is a bit more unusual but still classic
I also think you’d be less likely to get teddy then. Or Edwin?
I think Archie and Alfie are dated now so I wouldn’t go for those personally

richard Richie
thomas Tommy
Francis Frankie
arthur artie
george georgie
william Billy
harrison Harry
vincent Vinnie

Flopsy145 · 06/07/2024 22:36

Should have said he'll be Edward on BC for sure! And just known as Eddie! Thank you all for the reassurance ❤️
@greenblueredyellowviolet my DH is a bit of a traditionalist so trying to find an uncommon yet classic name is a tricky thing 😅 I loved Rowan at first but that was vetoed.

Definitely put Edward on bc. Eddie is cool… also he has nn options of Ted, Teddy etc. I feel like there’s more life flexibility if you can put Edward on your cv 🤷‍♀️

MerryMarys · 06/07/2024 22:41

I know 3 Edward Smiths!!!

Personally I'd choose a less popular/common name.

YourWinter · 06/07/2024 22:42

Edward, nn Eddie. Don’t put Eddie on the birth certificate.

AliceMcK · 06/07/2024 22:42

Love Edward/Eddie. Just correct people, no not Ted or Teddy, it’s either Edward or Eddie, or any other name you don’t mind. one of my DGFs was Edward, he occasionally went as Eddie but mainly Ned, especially after my DUncle was born, he was also Edward but went by Eddie.

I’ve never let anyone alter my DDs names, it’s what a gave them and that’s that. If they choose something different as they get older that’s up to them.

SkaneTos · 06/07/2024 22:46

Edward "Eddie" Smith is a great name.

JackieO22 · 06/07/2024 22:47

Freddie - same as Eddie with the 'ie' ending as you like that

Firsttimebabymummy · 07/07/2024 04:55

Eddie is lovely and I much prefer over Archie and Alfie!

urbanbuddha · 07/07/2024 05:09

I like Ned as a nn for Edward. Eddie is fine as well.

BoleynMemories13 · 07/07/2024 08:59

Glad you're going for Edward, nn Eddie, to give him more options. However, if you don't like those options I would definitely reconsider as Ed is inevitable one day. He might not want to be Eddie forever.

Not sure why some people are saying Alfie and Archie are dated. They're both still incredibly popular. To me, dated means hardly anyone is using it anymore and therefore it's now more associated with the era it was more popular. They're both still very popular (especially Archie).

I get what people are saying about choosing something more unusual if your surname is Smith, but there's also something to be said for a popular combination. Great for internet anonymity when he's older. An Edward or Ed Smith Google search definitely won't bring up anything that is obviously him straight away. A 'unique' first name doesn't offer the same level of protection.

Other suggestions which give 'ie/y' nicknames, which you seem drawn to, and other options for when he's older:-

Thomas (could be Tommy, Tom when older)
Matthew (could be Matty, Matt when older)
Henry (gives an ee ending as a full name and gives the option of Harry for less formal)
Samuel (could be Sammy, Sam when older)
William (could be Billy, or Bill or Will when older)
Robert (could be Robbie or Bobby, Rob or Bob when older)
James (could be Jamie or Jimmy, maybe Jay or Jim when older)
Joseph (could be Joey, Joe when older)

Pemba · 07/07/2024 11:10

Edmund instead of Edward? More unusual and you can still get Eddie from it (much nicer than Teddy imo). For some reason Edmund gives me a vibe of knights in armour.

Or there's Edwin but that seems quite old mannish to me still (my late grandfather's middle name, and his mother thought it was old fashioned at the time apparently, she'd sent her husband to get the birth certificate and he was supposed to put Edward!).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/07/2024 20:05

Edward Smith is super classic and very timeless sounding (even though I was put off Edward for my own DS because I don’t like the nn Eddie 🤣).

My ideas for less common but classic names - Owen (if you like Rowan) or Evan or something longer like Nathaniel or Maximilian (I think with a surname like Smith you could get away with a longer first name).

shoopshoopdedoo · 07/07/2024 20:24

I love Edward, Eddie and Ed! Much prefer it to all your other choices too, so I’d definitely stick with it!

ilconformista · 07/07/2024 20:26

I love the name Edward.

Longdarkcloud · 07/07/2024 20:35

I think Edmund is more classic than Edward, somehow, and less common.
There are too many Alfie’s and Archie’s and must be several thousand with the surname Smith.

Springwatch123 · 07/07/2024 20:45

Edwin instead of Edward?

Ivycott90 · 07/07/2024 20:47

Eddie Smith is absolutely lovely
