How did you decide on your babies names?

Hello, I have just given birth today and was hoping that I would be able to look at him and decide between the 2 names I have picked out, but I am still totally confused.

My mum's maiden name is Curtis, so I know I definitely want that in his name, but I love the name Noah. I just don't want to make a mistake and lumber him with a name he hates or a name that 300 other kids in his school year have. I also don't want his name shortened to Curt.

My choices are Curtis William, or Noah Curtis William.

I do not have a partner to help with the decision.

Thanks for any help or insight you might be able to offer 😘

I prefer Curtis if you're asking for opinions on the names?
I say that as i know of loads of Noahs and it's very popular around here, but otherwise is a nice name.

Congratulations

We chose the name before birth, but she didn't feel like any name for quite a while. You're just getting used to this new person who you don't really know. I think I thought of her as baby more than her name for quite a while. Just to let you know that's totally normal. Both names are lovely so you can't make a mistake here. Maybe try calling him each for a week to help make a decision.

If popularity is what matters to you then Noah was the Number 1 baby boy name in England and Wales in 2022 (latest data) with 4.5k born, and Curtis was number 901 in 2022 with only 34 born. So much more likely to be a Noah in his class, but also may not happen as popularity can be so local in a specific area. Hope that helps!

Noah Curtis is a great name with a lovely tribute. Do you need the William in there also? Congratulations on your baby!

Bettedaviseyes111 · 05/07/2024 21:48

I really like Noah.
I also like 3 names, both of mine have two middle names 😊
whatever you decide it will take a while before it settles in and you get used to the name.

darksigns · 05/07/2024 21:50

Many congratulations. You have six weeks to decide. Try out different names and see what sticks.

WetBandits · 05/07/2024 21:51

Oh I vote Curtis! He’d be one of about six Noahs in his class.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/07/2024 22:03

Curtis is cute, Noah will be one of many. Both nice names though, so go with your gut feeling

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/07/2024 22:34

This is an easy one - if you don’t want his name shortened to Curt then don’t use Curtis as a first name. While you have no guarantees about what your DS friends will call him when older, it is pretty common that a multiple syllable name will be shortened to the first syllable so you have to be prepared for that. I was put off a lot of names for my DS the same reason - I loved the full name but disliked the most obvious shortening.

Noah Curtis William is nice. Noah is trendy at the moment but it is pleasant sounding and with the huge variety in names now he is still likely to be the only one in his class (or one of 2 at most if you are unlucky).

andtheendwasgone · 05/07/2024 22:41

Congratulations on your baby today

Either are lovely. Go with your heart

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 05/07/2024 22:46

I like Noah Curtis William, but Noah is very popular if that will bother you.

I'd call him Curtis William Noah. People might shorten it to Curt. Just politely tell them his name is Curtis. Unless they are ignorant twats they'll call him Curtis.

NuffSaidSam · 05/07/2024 22:48

I quite like Curtis. It's different. He may well end up as Curt a teen/adult though.

DiscoBeat · 05/07/2024 22:52

Noah Curtis is lovely.

NewName24 · 06/07/2024 00:18

If you don't want him being called 'Curt' by anyone, then you can't name him Curtis, as obviously that will happen throughout his life.
So that solves your dilemma.

sentfrmmyiphone · 06/07/2024 00:40

We were always going to call our DD Megan Louise but when born we took one look and immediate changed it

OpheliaLibra · 06/07/2024 05:42

I wrote down all of our choices, stood at the back door and yelled, “(First, middle and last name), you need to come in now, I’m not going to tell you again” for ten minutes. Which ever one I wasn’t sick of hearing, that’s the one we picked.

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 06/07/2024 07:58

Noah Curtis sounds lovely.

Noah may be popular but there’s only one in my DC’s year at school yet we’re over run with George’s and Samuels.

TheBirdintheCave · 06/07/2024 14:05

I'd choose Curtis over Noah, especially if popularity is a concern. Noah has been in the top 10 for a good while, so, if you think cumulatively, there will be thousands and thousands of them of varying ages across the country. Even if there are none in your son's school class you're highly likely to come across another wherever you go.

Congrats on your new son by the way! :)

We chose our son's name long before we were even married. We had a girl's name chosen for years too but changed our mind two months before our daughter was born and she now has an entirely different one that wasn't even on our radar until I got pregnant.

JimNast · 06/07/2024 14:52

If you love Noah, use it. It is popular but does that really matter.
Use Curtis as a middle name if you don't like Curt.

Marchbug · 06/07/2024 18:37

Curtis is much less common, has a lovely meaning, and I really don't think people will automatically shorten it, it's great, I'd go for it 😍

HMTheQueenMuffin · 06/07/2024 18:40

Noah Curtis is lovely.

I was very boring with my DCs names. Ds1 was named after DH's uncle and DS2 was named after my father.

I did not find either of them very inspiring at the time but love them now. (They are aged 14 and 12).
