Thoughts on the name Austen - U.K. VIEWPOINT

Hello, I’m having triplets and slightly undecided on the name Austen. Personally we both love it. We also love it spelt ‘en’ as a literacy reference. I don’t know any Austen’s (or Austin’s) either but understand from the tracking charts that it’s been popular.

Has this name has its heyday and could it be ageing to call a Baby that now or is it one of those names that stays relevant?

Interested just from a U.K. perspective.

Thank you xx

There's a real trend for these Amarican-type surname names at the moment. Austin, Parker, Harrison, Preston, Jackson. Not my cup of tea but becoming quite mainstream if you like that sort of thing.

It's lovely. I knew the coolest guy called Austin when I was a teenager.

Surnames as first names is also a thing here in Scotland, not just an Americanism.

So did I! He was very dishy with floppy hair.
So Austin is fine for me. Austen is not, just awkward.

Not keen. It’s an awful American trend to use surnames for first names that we seem to have picked up.

When are we supposed to have "picked up" this name?

The broadcaster and long-standing Labour MP Austin Mitchell was 86 when he died.

ScandiNoirNuit · 05/07/2024 22:35

Austin is fine, Austen is just setting them up for a lifetime of misspelling, why go for the alt spelling?

Not especially keen on it as a name but it’s ok.

CyanideShake · 05/07/2024 22:44

It's not just a 'surname as a first name'. I have an uncle Austin, born around 1940-ish. He's Irish though and there and there have been lots of Irish Austins over the years.

Austin is a name, Austen is a surname.

Austin is a name, Austen is a surname.

No . . . . the surname can be spelled Austin or Austen

The forename is commonly spelled Austin

Thanks for that. I was responding in reference to the OP asking about the name Austen as a first name.

Really?!!!

I don't think so! Most of the guys in my family wouldn't make that connection even though all of us ladies are Janeite's!!!

I think it's more likely he'll be nicknamed 'Ford' . . . . .

He'll be "Powers" whether you call him Austen or Austin.

Yes, the NI Austin I know is in his 50s and was called after his father who was born in the late 1930s.

I”d stick with Austin, OP.

Austin is fab

Halfemptyhalfling · 06/07/2024 09:03

Would be good if the other triplets were called Mercedes and ford. Or Elliot and Brontë

Mairzydotes · 06/07/2024 09:26

There's a couple of Austins ( although I've only heard it aloud, rather than seen it written ). One gets Ozzy.

Austin Healey. I've always liked it. Not Austen though.

I've always felt sorry for him! What were his parents thinking?

EarthyMamma · 06/07/2024 10:57

I think it might be more popular soon as Austin Butler's fame increases.

He's in Dune2 (though not quite as recognisable), The Bikeriders with Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy.
He was amazing in the Elvis biopic.

My late ex FIL was Austin and I have always liked it.
OP if you like it use it!

EarthyMamma · 06/07/2024 10:59

Austin Butler

reallyalurker · 07/07/2024 12:48

I know a boy Austen with the -e- spelling. He's about 15. I quite like it. I would find it odd if used for a girl.
