Madeline or Florence

DD1 is Isabelle Alexandra, expecting DD2 next month. We can't decide between Madeline Elisabeth and Florence Elisabeth, thoughts?

Madeline said Mad-uh-line (like wine)
I don't like the Madeleine spelling.

If you have Isabelle it would be odd IMO to use Madeline and not Madeleine.

Gosh that's such an inappropriate thing to say about a potential third child. You don't know the OP's situation at all.

I struggle to see what was inappropriate. It was implied that it was ofc if OP was planning for a third.

Is it really that deep?

Madeline. It's so pretty and I prefer that spelling and pronunciation too op.

MiddleAgedDread · 03/07/2024 12:52

Florence

UnicornHo · 03/07/2024 13:05

If you use Madeline you’ll get a lot of people pronounce it Lyn at the end. I have a Madeleine and people often mis-spell it Madeline.

Jessieshome · 03/07/2024 13:55

Tough choice, both lovely! But, Madeline wins it for me.

However if I saw it written before you said it I would pronounce it Mad-uh-Lin (as in sin) both pronunciations are lovely in my opinion.

You said you don't like Madeleine, so it doesn't really matter, but I would pronounce this Mad-uh-lane (as in small road).

Radiatorspring · 03/07/2024 13:58

Madeleine should be pronounced Mad-elle-enn really. No 'uh' at all.

KayEmAy · 03/07/2024 16:17

Madeline Elisabeth by a mile for me :) I also think Isabelle Alexandra is gorgeous!

Just because I'm inspired -

Annika Elisabeth
Eden Elisabeth
Adrienne Elisabeth
Ivy Elisabeth

Emma Florence
Leona Florence

Felicity Madeline
Thea Madeline

Juliet Caroline
Odette Emily

I'm pretty sure Elisabeth and Isabelle are effectively the same name (like say Amelia and Emily) don't think we could have an Isabelle and Elisabeth

Yes I did think that when reading your OP. Is Elisabeth to honour someone? If not then it’s a blah, filler middle name choice for me, like May or Grace.

I prefer Madeline but that spelling always just makes me read ‘made line’. Also I think Madeleine makes it likely you’ll get the pronunciation you’d like.

Also think madeleine is far less common than Florence, round here at least

Florence is fine and has many nickname options - Flo, Floss, Florrie etc

I personally would pick Madeleine Florence - is there a reason why not?

@BingoMarieHeeler

My late mum was Alexandra Elisabeth, my middle name is Elisabeth so feels right to tribute my mum like this.

See if say Madeleine would be more likely to be "mad-Elle-en" then Madeline is 50/50 Mad-uh-line and mad-uh-lyn.

I think Madeline is my favourite. Izzy and Maddy is cute too. Where I don't like Flo/Flossie as much.

I’ve never heard Madeline pronounced that way. Do you like Adeline? I think that would give you that pronunciation.

Madel(e)ine goes better with Isabelle imo but I think the French spelling makes more sense alongside Isabelle

Iamacatslave · 03/07/2024 16:34

Florence is a beautiful name.

@Isanna I know a Florence who goes by Ren :)

think of the worst shortened version of the name spoken in the worst accent you can think of. then decide which one you hate the least.

I'm thinking Florence works best because even using my worst Roadman accent Flo or Florry sounds better than Maddy, Maddo

Isanna · 03/07/2024 16:38

We also like Amelie a lot but not sure.
DH is also big on Emma/Emily etc.
