Heres a little game to see how we all(or alot of people) Associate names with different people.Im going to put a few names in different groups e.g group a-b-c ect & you have to say what sort of people you think these names go with could be colour, hair eye type/colour ect.

Example- Damian= White, dark straight hair & dark eyes
The rules- No cheating do not read other peoples answers.
Read the names i give & write your answers then post. Only then can you look at the other posts this is to make sure you think for yourself & dont follow other peoples answers. What do the names make you think of?
ready here goes-

group A- OLIVER,JOSHUA,MOLLY

group B-WINSTON,TYREECE,CHANTAY,LEROY

group C-RAJ,AISHA,POONAM

group D-MOHAMMAD,ALI,AMNA,MUSTAFAH

watch out, this is really stereotyping and could even be racist. Not a game I want to play anyway.

Iklboo · 10/04/2008 13:29

Ooh potential minefield here

4kids · 10/04/2008 14:06

Its not meant to be stereotyping ot racist its interesting to see how people think alike thats all. i havnt asked people to put the names in catergories.like my example i put Damian -white dark hair & eyes cos i associate that name wth the film.Oliver i would say blonde blue eyes.for someone to say racist or stereotpying makes me think that you have read the list & straight away stereotyped thats not the game its to see how people associate names with different things.

I disagree. yes it's stereotyping but not racist and ultimately a bit of fun.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/04/2008 14:16

Alright -
a) white, middle class, blond/blue eyed
b) mixed race/black, working class
c) Indian or muslim
d) muslim

What's the point of this? The reason people think alike is because certain names are heavily stereotyped especially when you group them like that. I'm not sure what other descriptions you were looking for other than the ones I have given and/or euphemisms for them.

DrippingLizzie · 10/04/2008 14:18

A 'hot potato' thread of the highest order. Don't think you're being intentionally racist at all, 4kids, but I think many will find it a bit close to the bone...

I'll opt out of this one, if you don't mind...

but 4kids why do you care?

are you thinking of naming a potential dc Oliver and are worried it will be unsuitable if he has dark hair?

4kids · 10/04/2008 14:44

ITs to see how we are all actually alike we are all different people but when you do something like this it shows that actually we think alike. some1 associated the name wth cars thats there thought other has used colour ect. Ive played the game before & i thought it was very interesting to see how people think. Its not meant to stir anything I thought it would be interesting thats all.

Pen74 · 10/04/2008 15:01

I agree that this is bordering on racism.

MrsBadger · 10/04/2008 15:05

"ITs to see how we are all actually alike
we are all different people but when you do something like this it shows that actually we think alike."

except this has just shown we don't

4kids · 10/04/2008 15:29

Ah MrsBadger but it does how many people have said stereotype or racism that shows how many people think alike.(Im not a racist my kids are all mixed race)it shows how much we all like to say we are different but actually we are not.

OP posts:
meemar · 10/04/2008 15:34

I don't think it's racist, but I don't see the point.

They are just names, some are common in or are associated with some cultures and some aren't.

I don't get what it's supposed to prove.

VictorianSqualor · 10/04/2008 15:45

It's pretty obvious the names are in racial groups, at least by the last two examples.
You could say that the second group is only going to make you think of black people if you are being stereotypical but come on, mohammad and mustafah?

Pointless thread, pointless exercise and not exactly what I'd call a 'game'.

chuggabopps · 10/04/2008 15:50

4kids- the reason I did use cars was to indicate socio-economics rather than racial stereotypes, ie so as to highlight how arbitary what you were trying to show was.
I could have said:
a- John Lewis
b- BHS
c- house of fraser
d- Next

none of it really means anything,
people take their cultural reference points from what surrounds them. Some people on here will find that fun, some won't.

littlemissm · 10/04/2008 16:18

Hi im new & have just read this thread. i can see what the person who started this thread means. I think its a game to see how people think.Alot of people from wot i can see are thinking alike. It does show how similar people actually are no matter where we come from. This is just my view on wot i have read i can see some people are seeing it differently. Its actually made me think alot about how i view things i have read the list of names & had my views & they are similar to alot of others.Thats wot i think the person was getting at trying to make us see hey we arnt so different from the next person.I could be wrong but its got my mind ticking. This is the first thread iv posted on i hope i havnt said anything i shouldnt have before iv begun.this is just my view on the topic.

chuggabopps · 10/04/2008 16:28

hi littlemissm- sometimes threads get a bit judgemental, welcome to the jumblesale of opinion on here.

MrsBadger · 10/04/2008 16:34

I am still foxed by this 'how similar people actually are no matter where we come from'

MN is a remarkably homogenous population.

We are, in the majority, literate British women who can afford a computer, have at least one child and are between 20 and 40.
Is that what you're getting at, that no matter how our opinions on other subjects differ we're all subject to a similar set of cultural influences because we have seen the same range of films / books / newspapers?

Asking men and women of different ages and cultures would get you a wider variety of answers.
