We need a name that clearly sounds Scandi/Norse, in order to fit in with older siblings' names.

Please help - we still can't decide! Which names sound like they are Nordic??

We are down to:

Girls:
Thora
Eira
Ilse

Boys:
Erik
Otto
Ivar
Frej
Bo
August
Ruben

Girls:
Thora
Eira

The only Ilse I know is South African, she speaks Afrikaans so the name is Dutch I guess!

Boys:
Erik
Otto
Ivar
Frej

Ilse and Ivar/Erik. I have a reuben and it sounds more Hebrew or spelled like that quite popular in Spain.

Thora makes me think of Thora Hird.

Lotta or Freya. Bo can be m or f.

Google some Norse mythology for some great names

Eira
Thora
Ivar
Frej - all come from Norse mythology as far as I've understood 😊

I thought Eira was Welsh!

Watch a few episodes of vikings, you'll be sorted in no time.

Thora is lovely. I have Ivar shelves from Ikea - it's a great name.

Kind of.

What about Astrid? That was my ‘girl’ name but I’m having a boy so please use it instead! Grin

I know a norwegian couple called Erik and Ilse so those!

Definitely not Scandi soundinh to me are Thora (Hird), Eira (Welsh), Bo (American), August (British UC), Rueben (quite popular these days and also a sandwich). But I’m not an expert in Scandi names!

FayCarew · 02/07/2024 12:39

Yes. It will get 'thora' not 'tora' but both are nice. Makes me think of Thor.

Sigrid, Leni, Otto, Ivan?

Isn't August more Roman as it is named after the Roman emperor Augustus

Yes, I think so actually - just quite common in Scandi countries. Thanks for the reply!

Thora - love this name but I'd say Tora is the more Nordic version.
Eira - I know it has Scandinavian origins but I can only think of it as a Welsh name (For context, I am Welsh-Nordic origin!).
Ilse - more German than scandi.

Erik, Ivar, Frej - classic lovely Norse names.
Otto, Ruben - I don't think of these being Nordic at all, more German.
Bo - I don't like this one much, it seems too short to be anything.
August - love this name but feel it's in the rise of popularity.

On balance for a girl I'd go for Thora but consider Tora (or even Tóra depending where you are from) and for a boy I would choose Erik, Ivar or Frej.

This is very helpful - thank you so much for taking your time to comment on each name 😊How nice that you have Welsh-Nordic roots, that's a cool mix! I agree that Eira does sound Welsh...

Thora is also my favourite and the most common female Viking name found on Runes, according to my research. The original spelling was: Þóra, pronounced "Thora" with the "Th", and I don't mind the different spellings, but I do love your suggestion "Tóra".

My second choice would be "Ilse", as it is also common in Scandinavia, despite the German origin. Love Erik, Ivar and Frej as well!
