We have a James, is to too similar if we called our next baby James?

I mean, obviously that would be too similar - I meant Jack!

Well it’s a diminutive of James so you might get a few comments, but if you like Jack then go for it.It makes me think of Jack and Jill falling down the hill or Jack Sparrow though.

SkaneTos · 12/06/2024 23:37

I think James and Jack are almost too similar? But I'm not from an English speaking country originally, so I might not be the best person to ask.

You should do what makes you happy, of course!

DramaAlpaca · 12/06/2024 23:51

it’s a diminutive of James

It isn't, Jack is a diminutive of John not James.

Still too similar though.

Upminster12 · 13/06/2024 00:04

I don't think they're too similar at all, completely different names, different vowel sound too.

NewName24 · 13/06/2024 00:11

I don't think they are too similar - if you don't mind the initial being the same. That was something we really wanted to avoid.

SomewhereOverTheHill · 13/06/2024 00:25

I don’t think they are too similar.

CubaWooba · 13/06/2024 00:25

George and James is nice

KnitnNatterAuntie · 13/06/2024 05:44

I don't think they're too similar but I'm not keen on same-sex siblings having the same initial as it can cause issues later on with letters addressed to e.g. Mr J Smith

I agree James & George sound lovely together

I also like

James & Arthur

James & Edward

James & Marcus

James & Freddie

James & Theo

No, I don't think they are too similar

Firsttimebabymummy · 13/06/2024 07:55

No I think its fine.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/06/2024 08:06

What about 'James the First' and 'James the Second'?

Quite popular names some time ago.

user1492757084 · 13/06/2024 08:27

James and brother ..
John - nick name Jack.

It would be fine if their second names started with a letter different to each other so as to have ownership of their correspondence ..
Mr JA Smith and Mr JB Smith

Moreteaandchocolate · 13/06/2024 09:38

They are quite similar but not to the extent that it sounds silly.

Aglassaday · 13/06/2024 10:51

James and Jackson could work

HoldingOnForAHeron · 13/06/2024 11:17

@DramaAlpaca , Jack was used as a nn for John, but might have come from Jacques, James in French.

Upminster12 · 13/06/2024 11:47

Surely you don't need to worry about initials on post in the modern age? I can't think of anything young people do that isn't done electronically?

HoldingOnForAHeron · 13/06/2024 11:52

@Upminster12 , it depends what is used to identify an individual. Two or 3 J B Minsters as 21 Albert Road AB12 3CD might cause problems for electronic systems.

This made me laugh way more than it should have done. Bless you!

Personally, I prefer siblings to have separate initials. However, I don't think they are too similar if you don't mind them both having J names. The vowel sound is different at least, ay and ah. James and Jacob, or Jack and Jasper would be way too similar for me. I think you can get away with James and Jack though. I actually know a James and Jack sibset.

At the end of the day, both are traditional classics so it's a thumbs up from me if them having the same initials doesn't bother you.
