Posting for a friend who doesn't have MN

Expecting a baby boy

Likes unusual names but not unheard of names.
Prefer softer names not keen on hyper masculine names (no Zeus 🙂)
Like Welsh names (and has Welsh connections)
Really want a name they can shorten

So far like but are not set on
Elijah
Emrys
Ezra
Addison
Bryn.

Need suggestions. Really do not want top 50 names (they know Elijah is top 50 and is part of what puts them off)

MasterOfCake · 12/06/2024 20:03

Lewis
Dominic
Zachary

I know they’re not Welsh names but I was thinking more outside top 50…

Enko · 12/06/2024 20:38

Passing all of these on. Personally Feel

Lewis is Welsh but is said differently.

@Enko , it's Gwilym.

Enko · 12/06/2024 21:03

@AnnieBennDodd Im dyslexic and I simply copy pasted. As the dad is Welsh he would likely know.

Oh, yes. I see it now. The Gwilym I know is Gwil.

Emrys is a really old fashioned name to me but prob because I was in school with one.

I like:

Taliesyn - Tali

Peris (though we didn't use this as it has an obvious similarity to Penis which, to kids, would be a target)

Haydn (welsh spelling)

Owen

Cai

justfornow1 · 12/06/2024 21:36

Forgot my fave!

Griffith - Griff for short

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/06/2024 22:13

Love Emrys and Gwilym. If they like a softer sound they might also like Ioan, Tristan or Gethin. I also love Macsen but that might be too popular for them.

Not wanting top 50 is a bit bonkers! Top 10 I can understand.....

I love Kier-but I can see why that's out!

Patrick
Gilbert-shortened to Gil
John "shortened" to Jonty.
Elis
Stefan shortened to Stef.

GreenMarigold · 13/06/2024 09:42

Not sure how Welsh it is but I love Tristan/Tristram for a softer male name.

AnnieBennDodd · 13/06/2024 09:46

@CurlewKate , I've just had a look at the top 50, and they are names that are likely too be duplicated in a class. Joseph, for example is at number 50 but it's hardly unusual.

CurlewKate · 13/06/2024 10:08

@AnnieBennDodd There were 1300 baby Josephs last year. So one in 230 baby boys. You'd be very unlucky to get 2 in a class...
