What are people's thoughts on Julian? Brother for Alex.

I have a primary-school aged Julian. I chose it for a number of reasons:

• the Roman connection (I studied Classics)
• I adore jewellery so I delight in the fact that I can call him 'Jules'
• I'm half French and it works well in both English and French
• It's classic but not over-used nowadays
• I like Julian Barnes
• I happen to think it's a 'strong' name

DS is adamant there's another Julian in his school (state, London), but I'm not sure.

p.s. I'm early 40s and whilst I've heard of Julian Clary (chiefly because of his kids books), he really isn't someone I was particularly aware of before his books took up a place on our shelves

I also have a primary aged Julian. Love the name and it suits my son wonderfully. We chose between Julian and William when he was born and went for Julian because it’s a bit different.

Probably unfairly, I’ve yet to meet a nice Julie or Juliette so that’s swaying my opinion.

Julius is awesome though.

Really don't like Julius. I have a lovely friend called Julie actually. She's the only Julie I've ever known personally. Had to google Julian from Ghosts. That made me laugh!

I also like William! It could also be a contender but I still prefer Julian.

But not many people will remember that, so go for it, it’s a fine name.

Plus…..wears red braces and shoots his cuffs constantly to show off his chunky gold cufflinks.Aspires to the local posh golf club and drives a third hand sports car.Hopes to be asked to shooting weekends at The Manor. Is an insufferable prig.

I know a Julian in his 60s who is rather posh and a bit wet.

And a 3 year old Julian who is funny and boisterous and the complete opposite of how I viewed the name previously.

If you like the name enough then use it.

Seems a bit old fashioned to me. All the men called Julian I've known have seemed to be good people.

Alex or Alexander is a fine strong name though, but Julian sounds wet.

There was a boy in my road called Julian when I was a child. Once he went to school all the kids called him Julie. He hated it and his parents actually changed his name in rhe end, using his middle name instead.

I didn't live in a posh area tho. Maybe if you did it wouldn't be an issue.

DS really likes his name. Although he's still only in KS2, none of his peers has ever teased him about his name or suggested it's a girlie or wet name.

And I've actually been a bit surprised at how the nickname "Jules" isn't immediately adopted by those who know him.

He's a cheeky, lively boy. A huge reader (but then I've always pushed for him to read) and loves games (beach and garden games as well as sports). In his last school report, his teacher wrote that 'he is very funny'.

Maybe I watched too much of BBC’s Ghosts!

Unfortunately, emotionally unintelligent slimeball who cheats on his wife is the perfect summary of the ones I know.

Julius is better, imo.

I like Sebastian with Alexander.

Thoughts on Julian - it's a fine fairly standard sort of name, not one I particularly like or dislike. A bit like Alexander.
