Hello I'm looking for some opinions on the name Leonardo for our baby boy. Me and OH said years ago that we both liked the Name Leonardo (Leo for Short). Now we have found out we are having a boy we are now discussing names. My OH still loves Leonardo and is very set on it, now the time is getting closer I am having doubts about the name. We are keeping the name secret from. Family so there is no pre judgment, but now I feel like it's a bit to out there/full on and not sure if I Still love it is it just hormones making me doubt the choice. I'm leaning more towards just Leo as the full name as I still love the shortened name Leo but OH is Not convinced and he thinks we should 100% go with Leonardo. What are peoples thoughts? Help

I think Leonardo and Leo are both lovely.

You've more or less chosen the name in one of its forms, so you could just wait until he's born and see what suits him?

A similar thing happened with my friends with a different name. They were going to put the longer version on his birth certificate but call him the shorter version.

When he arrived, the short version just suited him so much that the longer version seemed redundant and too formal.

It's good to allow yourself a bit of flexibility.

I really like Leo but not keen on Leonardo - da Vinci or DiCaprio? It feels a bit OTT, unless you’re from Italy/Germany/Spain/etc.

I agree maybe wait till he's here to see which suits him best?
Or have the longer one on the birth certificate and call him Leo for short?

How about Leon

FayCarew · 10/06/2024 19:15

Go with Leonardo.

sixtyandsomething · 10/06/2024 19:18

leonardo is great, and gives him plenty of options for himself Lee/leo/leon etc

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/06/2024 19:43

I prefer Leo, but I do tend to prefer shorter names.

fashionqueen0123 · 10/06/2024 19:44

I’d go with Leo unless you have family background for Leonardo.

I think the litmus test for naming kids should be yelling it up the stairs several times and seeing if it gives you the ick.

CalamitiousJoan · 10/06/2024 19:50

I’d go Leo mostly because I’m old enough to think Ninja Turtles but also because unless he uses Leonardo all the time, which is unlikely, people are likely to assume he’s just Leo (or Leonard at a push, especially if that’s one of the next generations of ‘grandad’ names coming down the line) and then it’s just an admin hassle to constantly keep telling people his actual name.

I love the name Leonardo and know a fab 16 year old called Leonardo. He is from an Italian family though and I think you need that kind of background for that name to work. For example Leonardo Smith just doesn’t go well

Nicebloomers · 10/06/2024 21:16

Leonardo is great. I love Leon as well as Leo for a diminutive.

Huskyfat · 10/06/2024 22:26

I actually scraped Leonardo because of how popular Leo is

OccasionalHope · 10/06/2024 22:39

I would only do Leonardo if you have Italian heritage or are an art historian.

The English varian5
Leonard isn’t pronounced the same way, but what about Leopold?

Or Leo on its own is perfectly OK.

MinnieMnotasinmouse · 11/06/2024 13:24

I personally think you should just call your child Leo and not have it short for anything

Longdarkcloud · 11/06/2024 15:24

What about Lionel? Could still be called Leo or Lio. Or Lyon is a perfectly legitimate eEnglish name.
However, I would prefer Leonardo shortened to Leo. Your DS can then choose in the future when to use the more formal name. In signatures Leo. would be ok as a standard shortening of Leonard or Leonardo etc.

I love this name, both Leo and Leonardo, and was planning on using it if DD had been a boy! We live in Italy and it's the most popular boys' name by far here, which puts me off it slightly, but it's also a family name on DHs side. The full version may be slightly unusual in the UK but it's still lovely.
