Arabic/English names

Hello everyone!

Expecting in September, husband's native language is Arabic and mine English. We want an Arabic name but one that is relatable to English speakers also.

So far we have:
Sayeed or Samir for a boy
Sara or Yasmin for a girl

I'm more fond of the boys names at the moment - my husband loves Sara but it's a name that's already in my family and quite common. I like Yasmin when it's pronounced the Arabic way (Yasmeen) but hate Yaz!

Surname begins with an A.

Would love some additional suggestions!

What about Zara rather than Sara?

I would spell Yasmeen like that if you want that pronunciation. I have known it to be spelt that way. Less confusing as Yasmin would get Yas-min a lot.

I like Samir.

So many lovely names - thank you! I like Zara as a variation. Layla is jumping out at me too.

Zara, Ayesha,
Ashar, Laurence and Amir.

Samir - I just hear smeer.

My ex was half Syrian half Irish and chose an Irish name for his son and an Arabic one for his daughter ; his reasoning was that girls get away with an exotic name whereas boys will likely suffer from some form of racism… He called his daughter Soraya
I like Nimri which means tigress ;) If it is a boy then I would not chose one of Mohamed's hundreds or so names. I would go for Seif which means wolf

MiddleagedBeachbum · 10/06/2024 16:13

Arabic spelling of Leila is like this and not Layla.
And it can be pronounced Lee-luh / Li-la / Lay-la

Its a fab name! 😬

I actually know/met girls and women with some of these names:
Aaliyah
Aifa
Amina
Dina
Eira
Erina
Lana
Lina

The boys names are very boring.

Iliyas is nice (and I know a few north Africans who have anglicized the spelling to Elias).

Hana can also be Hannah. Nora and Dalia. I also love Marwa.

Every other little girl in MENA is Maryam at the moment.

Issa is a big fave of mine. Sami/Samir also great.

I totally get this - and it's something I've raised with my husband too. Although we don't live in the U.K. we may return in the future and I'm trying to make the baby's life as easy as possible.

We're avoiding the Mohamed variations and any names that might be associated with terrorist groups (as terrible as that is to say, my husband gets it).

I love Elias! It's quite close to my daughter's name (from a previous marriage) - I'm sure she'd be very happy with it!

Hana is a bit too close to my own name!

Not sure if you have decided on names yet! My partner is Lebanese and I’m half Irish, half English. I always loved the name Laith (means lion) - before I met him, and it happens to be Arabic and what I would call ethnically ambiguous 😂 so that’s what we called my first son. People do get it wrong often, which surprised me (I say Laith, like Faith with an L).

We called my second son Sami for a week, but then changed it to Haitham (means eagle). I know it’s a bit tongue twister-y as their names are very similar with the ‘aith’, but we do love the name and it’s the only one that suited him!

Other potential names (we didn’t want any religious ones)

Boys:

Hayder
Rami
Hani

Girls:

Maya
Farah
Amal

Good luck!
