Will she get teased? Juliet

We have pretty much decided on the name Juliet but no middle name yet. I love it but I am just hesitant about the Romeo and Juliet association and whether or not you think it will induce teasing throughout school - where's Romeo? Etc.

No I don't think it will be an issue. Juliet is a beautiful name. We have known 2 and its never come up.

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/06/2024 07:22

No I don’t think so! I know one who goes by Etty which is cute :)

Lovely name.

Mandarinaduck · 07/06/2024 07:37

I think calling a boy Romeo lays him open to teasing but Juliet? No. It’s a normal, popular and pretty name.

WimpoleHat · 07/06/2024 07:40

No. Juliet is a lovely, but “standard” name. It’s not like Desdemona or even something like Ophelia for an obvious “Shakespeare” connection.

Seaside1234 · 07/06/2024 07:42

I'm jealous, I always wanted to call a girl Juliet but doesn't work with OH's surname! Beautiful name, and speaking as someone with a Shakespearean name myself, can't imagine that connection will be a big deal.

PuppetQueen · 07/06/2024 07:42

I know a young (11yo) Juliet and she doesn't get teased. She has a big personality and "owns" her name, so now if anybody mentions Juliet, I think of her rather than the "Where art you Romeo?" one! Go for it - it's a beautiful name, and somewhat underused.

Parfortheparsnip · 07/06/2024 07:52

It's a lovely name. It was on my list for DD but we have a surname that sounds a bit too similar. But it's lovely.
Just because I find it irritating - 'where for art thou Romeo' actually means 'why are you called' not 'where are you.'
I feel better Blush

There was a Juliet in my class at school and I don’t remember her being teased about it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/06/2024 00:50

No, it’s not at all like Romeo - Romeo is an uncommon name with only one major cultural association (and there’s no other name that really sounds like it). Juliet is very unlikely to get teasing due to the close similarity of very popular (in the 60’s/70’s) Julie and well known/used internationally Julia - so as a name Juliet sounds more popular than it actually is in the UK imo.

I’m not saying she won’t get men possibly using her name as a come- on/chat up line when she’s older (I’m a Julia and even I’ve had a Romeo comment 🙄) but even if they study the play in senior school, I really don’t think there would be any teasing as such - it’s a “normal” name. Are Eve’s teased in school about the Bible when there are so many Eve/Evie/Eva’s about now? But I’m sure they’ll get occasional Adam comments from blokes who think they’re being original🤣.

I adore gorgeous Juliet btw - it’s a great choice imo, so elegant and romantic sounding.

YouBelongWithMe · 08/06/2024 00:53

I have one! She loves her name. Never been an issue.

Sundaysunshine21 · 08/06/2024 11:13

Completely agree with what others have said, really can’t see this being an issue. I know a few Juliet’s and none of them have had any problems! Don’t know any little Juliets though, so I think it would be quite unusual now which is a bonus.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 08/06/2024 23:13

There are far worst names than Juliet.
I would say no to Romeo as the connotations of being a Romeo are not good.
Juliet is fine. I can’t imagine being teased for that.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 08/06/2024 23:36

It's a classic that has stood the test of time.

Treestumpp · 13/06/2024 23:10

Always makes me think of this very beautiful song

miniaturepixieonacid · 14/06/2024 09:50

No, I don't think so. It's a known name in the UK. If you called a boy Romeo then yes, I think there might be some teasing. But not Juliet.

If you're really worried you could use the spelling Juliette? I've known both.

Gorgeous name.
