31 weeks pregnant with my second child, a little girl. We have a 3 year old boy already.

Our top two names are

Lyla
Etta

Which do you prefer? Surname is 11letters long and starts with an L. Brothers name starts with an E.

Happy to wait and see what she looks like when she's born, but can't seem to choose a favourite out of these two! OH prefers Lyla, I prefer Etta 😅

Thank you 💜

Love Etta! Completely disagree that it needs to be short for something, it’s perfectly fine in its own right.

I don’t particularly like Lyla, I feel it’s a completely different vibe to Etta.

@CuriousGeorgie3 thank you! You're strengthening my argument to put to OH 😅 I think I've got my heart set on Etta xx

I think the accent bit is very important! I had a colleague from London, who pronounced another colleagues name eh-a. It really put me off Etta!

EMJL · 03/06/2024 13:47

@Snugglemonkey we live near Brighton, most people round here do pronounce their "t's" xx

I don’t really like Etta, it seems a bit nothingy to me.

Lyla L I think is ok as long as there aren’t more Ls in the surname apart from the first letter. Lyla Lawrence would be fine for example.

Lyla Love it

KayEmAy · 03/06/2024 15:30

Lyla by a long shot

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/06/2024 22:35

sorry, I agree Etta sounds too nickname for me and also sounds like “ate a (choc bar etc)” in some accents which might lead to teasing if she ever becomes particularly over or underweight? Similar Ella is popular but far nicer imo (or Juliet, Harriet etc with Etta as a nickname).

Lyla is okay - although I much prefer the traditional Lilah spelling and actually the spelling issue puts me off a bit as there’s also Lila and similar Lyra too…

The L and E thing I don’t think matters at all though - alliteration makes a name memorable imo and I share an initial with my brother and it never caused any issues with post (in fact it was handy for passing down or sharing school stuff we’d finished with as our mum put J. Surname on everything rather than full names).

FangsForTheMemory · 03/06/2024 23:08

Lyla.

Etta is a nickname.

RogueFemale · 03/06/2024 23:36

Lyla is really awful.

Much prefer Etta, it's light, sweet and pretty.

Fontainebleau007 · 04/06/2024 08:37

Lyla

KirstenBlest · 04/06/2024 11:23

Etta, but it sounds like 'Ate a'

villamariavintrapp · 04/06/2024 12:16

Lyla. I don't like Etta-it sounds like ate a.. and also makes me think of the terrorists, but appreciate lots of people don't.

MariaVT65 · 04/06/2024 12:17

If your surname begins with L then i’d go Etta.

Theoldwoman · 04/06/2024 12:18

I would have said Etta, but your son starts with an E …
I don’t care for illiterate names, so Lyra is a no.

KirstenBlest · 04/06/2024 13:38

How is Lyra an illiterate name?

EMJL · 04/06/2024 14:21

@Theoldwoman I asked about Lyla rather than Lyra, and what do you mean by it's an illiterate name? 🤔

Etta
However both are lovely

Greendogboots · 08/06/2024 09:55

Etta. I know a little Etta and it's a lovely name!

Firebird83 · 08/06/2024 09:56

Etta. I like Lila but not the y spelling.

EMJL · 08/06/2024 20:33

Thank you 😍💜

mrssunshinexxx · 08/06/2024 21:27

Etta

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/06/2024 21:35

I much prefer Etta, all the L names seem to all blend together and are much the sameness. Etta feels more special

wafflesmgee · 08/06/2024 21:44

Etta
