Just wondering which pronunciation others would assume?

And/or which you prefer?

OP posts:

Not English, but Anastaysia, surely? I can only imagine the star pronounciation for an Australian accent?

MILLYmo0se · 02/06/2024 11:14

Ana-stay-sia is how most people here would say it, even if parent/child introduce as Ana-stah-sia, id think Ana-stay-sia would be more an accent thing

pinkyredrose · 02/06/2024 11:14

The first one. Why would you add an 'r'?

JamSandle · 02/06/2024 11:14

Stay

HunterHearstHelmsley · 02/06/2024 11:15

Ana-stay-sia

I prefer that of the two pronunciations also.

GreenFairies · 02/06/2024 11:15

The first one.

If I heard the second, I would assume the parents are trying to sound posh, with emphasis on the trying.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 02/06/2024 11:15

Ay is the more common pronunciation in British English, the only nastarzya I know is Polish

HemmAyes · 02/06/2024 11:16

I would pronounce it Ana-stah-sia
Have also heard it pronounced
Ana-stay-sia
Definitely not star, there's no R in it and I've never heard anyone pronounce it that way

Beautifulbythebay · 02/06/2024 11:16

I know an Anastashia.. It's awful. Anastasia with a stay sound...

Pinkywoo · 02/06/2024 11:19

In my accent, and I'm assuming the OPs too, "star" sounds exactly the same as "stah", as has been covered on these threads a million times.

Littlelillies · 02/06/2024 12:17

Obviously the one without an R!!!

I've never heard Ana STAR sia Confused

Littlelillies · 02/06/2024 12:18

I would pronounce it Ana-stah-sia

Me too! No R nor AY

CJ0374 · 02/06/2024 12:25

@whynosummerI can only imagine the star pronunciation for an Australian accent?
I've lived/worked in 3 countries, 1 being Australia, and I've always heard it pronounced the 1st way, with 'stay' in the middle.

merryhouse · 02/06/2024 12:35

You could call her Stasi for short Grin

(don't do this)

BathTangle · 02/06/2024 12:37

The only Anastasia I have known (Russian father) was Ana-stass-ia, nickname Stassy.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/06/2024 12:45

The first one. Why would you add an 'r'?

Nobody's adding an actual 'r' sound. The 'ar' bit is the OP's phonetic representation of an 'ah' sound, because 'ar' and 'ah' sound identical in most English accents in England. It's the difference between a rhotic and non-rhotic accent and it comes up on virtually every pronunciation-related thread on MN!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/06/2024 12:46

Both pronunciations of the name are totally fine. I've met both kinds.

PuddingAunt · 02/06/2024 12:47

A-NAST-a-see-a
;)

sprigatito · 02/06/2024 12:47

I would pronounce it Anastar-sia and I'm not posh or pretentious! I thought it was the correct pronunciation of a Russian name, and the "stay" pronunciation was American. Happy to be told I'm wrong though.

BathTangle · 02/06/2024 12:37

Yes I think the ah sound is the original Russian and Greek version.
ay sound is probably the anglicised version so you can choose which ever you prefer

FineWordsButterNoParsnips · 02/06/2024 12:53

Stace

ilovethesunnydays · 02/06/2024 12:55

I've known two, both pronounced it Anna-Stay-Sha. They were related to each other. Both used the shorter name Stay-Sha for day to day.

lucasnorth · 02/06/2024 12:59

A-na-sta-SIA (with the accent at the end) is what I’d assume if I saw it written

tarheelbaby · 02/06/2024 12:59

Anna stay zhuh - and that's how the DJs pronounce the pop singer's name

That's what I would guess at first, but if they had Russian or Eastern European heritage, Anna-stah-zhya wouldn't surprise me either.
