I've always had it down as a boys name, but starting to like it for a girl!

A boys name and also a Hebrew name.

I do also think about World War II and how the Nazis made Jewish people wear the Star of David with the word Jude on it.

Nopetynoppy · 01/06/2024 22:42

Jude for a boy
Judy for a girl

Revelatio · 01/06/2024 22:46

I like the name, but as someone who has a name that’s a famous song, I wouldn’t want to put that on anyone!!!

leccybill · 01/06/2024 22:46

The last four baby boys born I know of are called Jude.

Peclet · 01/06/2024 22:47

I knew a Jude (female) and she was extraordinary.

Works for both, but fabulous for a girl.

That's why Jude doesn't travel well - in German it's the word for a Jew. Pronounced Yoo-de

Jamfirstest · 02/06/2024 09:22

Both - it's a neutral name imo I know Jude's who are male and female.

BoleynMemories13 · 02/06/2024 10:16

As a stand alone name I definitely think it suits a boy better. If I met a female Jude I would assume it's short for Judith. Given that it's currently in the top 50 boys names and continuing to rise (for boys) I think most people would assume boy.

thetaleoflife · 02/06/2024 10:42

There's a few Jude - boys in my child's year

It's a boy's name. If you wouldn't call a boy Sophie, don't call a girl Jude.

This

Littlelillies · 02/06/2024 12:37

I only know female Sophies

I know both female and male Judes. Jude sounds soft and is a nickname for Judith

avocadotofu · 02/06/2024 12:38

I think of it as a boys name.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 02/06/2024 15:12

Officially a boys name but it feels like a girls name to me. When I see it on a boy I think, hmmm, that should be a girls name really. I don't even think it suits Jude law.

RoseUnder · 02/06/2024 15:15

As another poster said, Jude means Jewish in some languages and comes from the Hebrew in the Old Testament. To me it’s a strange choice of name unless the religious meaning is applicable personally, but get that many people aren’t that bothered about the meaning or history of a name.

Still, Christian Slater is Jewish and Jude Law is Christian. 🤷🏻‍♀️

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/06/2024 20:17

Neither 🤣 Sorry , I struggle with how Jude’s become so very popular/trendy now when apart from Jude Law the main cultural references are a very depressing Hardy novel and the Holocaust . And it rhymes with rude, nude and prude.

BUT so many people seem to love it, so maybe they’ve met lovely ones and so link it to them and choose it for that reason? I do have a lovely female friend called Jude so to me it swings girl (still wouldn’t use it for a DC though 🤣, and no, obviously I’ve never told her I dislike her name!).

Springwatch123 · 02/06/2024 20:17

Boy

OhYoko · 02/06/2024 20:21

I like it for both. I've always thought it'd be lovely on a girl since reading Jude the Obscure as a teenager.

Clawedino · 02/06/2024 20:23

Boy

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 02/06/2024 20:25

Girls name. I cant stand it for boys and it is very common now.

RuthW · 02/06/2024 21:58

I think it's too girly for a boy

Teamarugula · 02/06/2024 22:02

It’s definitely a boys’ name for me. Would never consider it for a girl and would assume one I came across was a boy. Judy is a girls’ name, use that!

USaYwHatNow · 02/06/2024 22:08

We named our son Jude way before the World Cup because we wanted something a bit different but not too out there. Now thanks to Jude Bellingham I know loads of Judes 😭

It's literally a boy's name.
