Are these the same name to you?
my pick is Frank for its simplicity my husband prefers Franklin. To me they are completely different names with totally
different vibes. I know most Franklins would get shortened to Frank later in life but that is out of a parents control.
which would you pick?

my other pick was Harris but again he prefers Harrison.

I prefer Frank to Franklin, Harrison to Harris and Harrison to Frank.

Frank's fine. I'm not keen on Franklin. It seems a bit American, surnamey and feminine.
I see Harris and Harrison as two different names, but prefer just Harry.

I like Frank/Franklin. I've only known 1, and didn't know for years that full name was Franklin and always went by Frank. I prefer these over Harris

If you want Frank, then call the boy Francis.

Franklin is awful, surnamey and American. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_(given_name)

Francis is classic, has global variations. Your son can also choose whether he prefers to go by Frank or Francis when he's adult.

My order of preference would be

Harry
Frank nn Frankie
Harrison
Harris
Franklin

Frank is half a name - Franklin is lovely.

Same with Harris/harrison

SausageRoll2020 · 30/05/2024 21:47

Frank and Franklin are very different vibes to me.
Frank is an actual first name, traditionally a diminutive of Francis, where as Franklin is a surname sometimes used as a first name.

Harris makes me think of tweed and country knits worn on Scottish Islands, Harrison just makes me think of Harry and Meghan.

PurpleChrayn · 30/05/2024 21:55

Franklin puts me in mind of wankin'.

NetMum2 · 31/05/2024 04:18

I much prefer Harry to Harris and Harrison (unless your husband is called Harry).

I also prefer Frank nn Frankie to Franklin. Or how about Francis?

MirandaBlu · 31/05/2024 04:29

Frank is a name in its own right, maybe used a bit more in other European cultures than in the UK/Anglosphere. It can also be short for Francis (an old name spanning many cultures and languages) or Franklin (a surname mostly used in English-speaking countries).

Harris (place name, increasingly popular in Scotland) and Harrison (surname) seem completely distinct and separate to me, although I suppose a Harrison might be Harris for short, and either one could be Harry (also short for Henry or Harald/Harold).

Hold out for what you love - if you don't want Franklin or Harrison, keep looking for a name you and your husband both love.

TheSandgroper · 31/05/2024 05:00

Francis is better.
