What are your thoughts on the girls name Adelaide?
I'm looking for a name that conjures up a feeling beautiful sunshine coast, golden beaches etc.

I've obviously posted about Sofia and Lucia which are both Spanish and give that same feel.

Any other names you can think of with that same feeling?

clumsy, prone to shortening,(Adele) / Aide, old fashioned, shortened to Heidi (Adelheid), Isobel is better, keep thinking

FayCarew · 25/05/2024 12:13

Not keen, sorry. How about Calypso?

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/05/2024 12:41

I like it! I also like Adeline. Other ideas -

Thalia
Carolina
Florence
Isla
Cora
Shelley
Lana
Malia
Maya
Summer
Skye
Iris
Eden
Cali
Coraline
Eleni
Vivien

FayCarew · 25/05/2024 14:44

It's better than Adeline.
Lucia and Sofia aren't particularly Spanish. Lucia is from Latin and Sofia/Sophia from Greek.

Everleigh13 · 25/05/2024 14:47

I love it. I think it’s really pretty.

fluffypuffyrug · 25/05/2024 14:53

I think it's a bit clumsy sounding with the two 'd' sounds.

I think Adelae is nicer.

fieldsofbutterflies · 25/05/2024 14:55

I think Adeline js nicer.

Spanishsenorota · 25/05/2024 21:49

@Moreteaandchocolate Love Cali (but it's a shortening for a town in Spanish I was reading - Calidosa?). Malia I just associate with the place where teens go for their first drunken holiday with their friends! Summer doesn't really go with the surname, ashame as I love it. Same with Alba another name I really like. I do like Eleni, but not sure it there would be pronunciation issues.

@FayCarew Lucia and Sofia are in the top 5 girls names in Spain so I'm not sure how you can say they not really Spanish..

Thank you all. Sadly not too keen on Adeline.

I love it! I wanted it for this baby but DP gave it a hard veto ☹️

Enko · 25/05/2024 22:38

I love Adelaide. Classic and not overused . Not a trend like Adeline at the moment (I am not keen on name trending) and if you like nicknames a good few options.

I take it you've never been to Adelaide? 😁

partying2 · 25/05/2024 23:59

Sorry I don’t like the name Adelaide reminds me of the South Australian city which sadly doesn’t have any appeal. No golden beaches there..

Alba is lovely!

i also think Adeline is a lovely name - very classic and timeless and unique (one of my best friend is called Adeline so we couldn’t use the name).

seafronty · 26/05/2024 06:56

Awful choice.

Costa. Now that's got sunny beaches written all over it.

user1492757084 · 26/05/2024 07:15

Not seeing the coastal beaches and sunshine in Adelaide.

Lucia - yes
Others ..

Claire
Poppy

Eleanor
Saffron
Sandy

Lavender
Soleil
Aster
Leonor
Aelia

I love the name Adelaide but it's a very different style to the also lovely Lucia and Sofia. It also doesn't conjure up golden beaches.

I'm. bit confused about what sort of name you like as the styles are so different.

OrangeJ · 24/10/2024 02:16

Sorry, I know this is an old thread but feel I need to correct due to the people who have said there are no beaches in Adelaide. I would question if they’ve ever been as there are LOADS of beautiful, sunny beaches! Google:

Glenelg, Moana, Largs, Noarlunga, Henley, Christies to name a few.

I guess you must have picked a name now so wonder what you decided on? For what it’s worth, I like the name Adelaide. The city was named after a well-loved English queen so I think it has a kind of grace and regal feel to it.

Fiestytiger · 24/10/2024 07:29

I quite like it. I knew an Adelaide once was shortened to Adie. It does make me think of Australia as a first thought though.

Moonshiners · 24/10/2024 07:33

I've never heard it as anything other than the Australian city so thought it would be like calling someone Bournemouth.

MistyF · 24/10/2024 08:28

@Moonshiners so you never heard about British Queen? The city was named after her, she had name that was first recorded in Early Middle Age.

No I haven't but I have to say I know almost nothing about the Royal Family from any era. It has never interested me and the history I studied at school didn't touch on it all. I live history just not anything to do with Royals.
