Hi...

We have finally managed to narrow our search for a Scandi baby girl name down to either:

First name + middle name:

Astrid Thora
or
Thora Astrid

Help!! Which one is nicest? We love both <3

Astrid... Fab name...

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/05/2024 17:10

@Gruffling Thora Hird died about 20 years ago.

Stylishcooncil · 23/05/2024 17:10

Which do you prefer? because you will only use one of them anyway, so make that the first name.

Gruffling · 23/05/2024 18:19

I am smiling because this is the kind of mix-up I would make Grin.

Thora Birch is the American actress from Ghost World and American Beauty.

Dame Thora Hird was the actress who starred in Last of the Summer Wine and advertised Stannah stairlifts in the 90s!

<facepalm> oh dear, now you have said that I realise my mistake!

I say that kind of thing all the time too - for me, it's an ND thing. I once said 'it's 10 miles, as the eagle flies' in a very important work meeting. I didn't understand why some of the people in the room smiled at that point, until a lovely colleague discretely pointed out my mistake afterwards. Luckily the committee saw the funny side and my proposal was accepted, but I still laugh about that with my colleague years later.

Both are lovely @Taggys .
Ignore the middle name for now and consider whether
Astrid Surname or Thora Surname goes best.

LittleGreenDuck · 23/05/2024 19:02

Definitely Astrid, beautiful name.

Concretejungle1 · 23/05/2024 19:08

Thora astrid

timoteigirl · 23/05/2024 21:15

In my opinion Thora sounds quite harsh and not feminine at all. Ever known one. Astrid is more common.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 23/05/2024 21:44

Thora Astrid by a country mile. I like both pronunciations of Thora, but marginally prefer the hard TH.

cariadlet · 23/05/2024 21:48

Astrid is very pretty.

Thora sounds harsh and also reminds me of Thora Hird so too grannyish but I suppose only people my age (50s) and older will make that connection.

RogueFemale · 24/05/2024 00:15

As you are a Scandi family it's not really a good place to ask about names on here. Names such as Thora don't have a positive vibe in the UK, - Astrid sort of ok.

AdaColeman · 24/05/2024 00:18

Astrid, a beautiful name!

CJ0374 · 24/05/2024 00:22

I prefer Astrid Thora.

Think about the initials against your surname too:

TA_

My nursery has quite a few girls with the more vintage names and there is a Thora. I wasn’t sure at first but it’s grown on me so much if I’m ever lucky enough to have another girl she will be a Thora.

I hate Astrid btw don’t get the love for it, especially if your in an area where people shorten names, you run the risk of her being called Ass

urbanbuddha · 24/05/2024 04:39

Astrid Tora. Thora doesn’t work for me.

GiantCousCous · 24/05/2024 05:30

Astrid Thora, alternative sounds like Thorarastrid

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 24/05/2024 06:01

Astrid.

Toomuchgoingon79 · 24/05/2024 06:02

Why not wait until she's born and see which name she looks like?

Bringbackthebeaver · 24/05/2024 06:03

Both are nice but I think the two 'a' sounds in a row in 'Thora Astrid' is a bit awkward, so I'd go for Astrid Thora.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 24/05/2024 06:04

Thora just makes me think of Thora Hird.

I'd definitely pronounce it Tora op! Much nicer ☺️

I really like Thora.

HairyToity · 24/05/2024 06:09

Astrid

Mintyt · 24/05/2024 06:12

I like them both but not together. Together is trying to hard ( for what I don't know). But Thora had the edge. Love it

Bahamapyjama · 24/05/2024 07:21

Thora is a beautiful name. I'm not a fan of Astrid particularly, so would choose Thora as a first name. I don't think 'flow' of first and middle names is a problem really, how often does someone use both unless it's hyphenated?

ThePassageOfTime · 24/05/2024 07:23

My Astrid gets tons of compliments on her name and she loves it.
