If you had to rename your children, now that they're older, what would you call them?

I was talking with a friend about names that, in hindsight, we were glad we didn't use for our children that had been on our lists while we were pregnant.

We then got onto names we didn't use but would have definitely suited them now that they're older and we know their personalities. So I wondering what everyone else's were, if you had to change their name.

Dd- so patient and calm, great with children and a natural teacher. I'd call her Willow or Rowan. I feel these names sound soft and wise.

DS1- Introverted, really studios, loves learning everything he can about his interests, he's passionate but in a quiet way. I'd call him Dmitry or Vincent. I feel these names sound romantic and poetic.

Ds2- very extroverted, very high energy. He's definitely an act now, think later character and just dives into everything, really adventurous. I'd call him Ivar or Bjorn. I feel the viking style of name sound really strong and fearless.

Interesting question! And interesting to read your thoughts.
I don't have any children, so I can't give any examples of my own.

I can offer this story, though.
I have a relative who was supposed to have a certain name, but when he was born, the older generation of the family "vetoed" it because it was the name of some movie star that had been popular 20 years earlier, but had behaved badly or something. So my relative was given another name, a perfectly fine name, but the parents always kind of regretted it. And as you can imagine, nobody remembered anything bad about that movie star or the name of the movie star later on. Many people did not even know who the movie star was, at all.
25 years later, when my relative was an adult, he decided to add the name as a middle name, to make his parents happy, and beacause he liked the name.

Oooh interesting. Generally think mine suit their names but

dd1 would by daisy because she is forever innocent 😇

dd2 would be Matilda because she is a warrior

dd3 would by Skye just because she suits it and day she arrived it was stormy!

dd4 would be zelda because another warrior!

CountingCrones · 22/05/2024 23:10

I think I’d save time and go for Your Imperial Highness

JimNast · 23/05/2024 08:05

Perfectly happy with the names chosen. Still love the names.

Moreteaandchocolate · 23/05/2024 08:16

Still love the names I chose. But just for fun, DD1 would also suit Isla and DD2 would suit Phoebe. DS would be a good Arthur :)

Littlelillies · 23/05/2024 13:29

I'm still happy with our choices!

I don't think names need to match any 'personality' . On the contrary, people become their names.

That is an interesting story, and does show how pop culture associations aren't always the thing to base a name on.

My in laws absolutely HATED DS1s name before he was born, but I'm so glad I didn't care as I still love his name and would have regretted now using it.

Your girls sound brilliant and you have a lovely taste in names so I'm sure their real names are as fabulous as these.

Yes I also think my children suit the names we gave them but I just thought it was interesting to think about what other names they'd suit as we name tiny babies without any idea who they will grow into.

Zippy and George - genuinely 🙄🤪 (teenagers)

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/05/2024 20:13

Possibly my daughter's because it definitely says upper middle class public school girl. She also looks very young. I think it have gone with someone stronger.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/05/2024 20:15

The one I'd love to change is one of my son's middle name (Thomas), I've just never liked it. It means twin which he isn't. I wish I gone for Harry.

geoger · 23/05/2024 20:23

Oooh interesting thread…….ds would be a Zac - he just looks like a Zac/Zachary and is very cheeky, extroverted and tells the funniest jokes. Dd is so gentle and caring I think she’d suit being called Amelia or Phoebe

timoteigirl · 23/05/2024 20:41

Dominic and Lyra

RandomUsernameHere · 23/05/2024 20:44

I wouldn't choose DD's middle name now, just gone off it for some reason. It doesn't really matter though as it never gets used for anything. Still happy with their first names luckily!

Mimi987 · 23/05/2024 20:45

Ds1 would be Frederick, just because I have name regret on this one!

ZiggyZowie · 23/05/2024 21:29

I'm happy with all their names but I would probably pick Tom for my DD1 as he suits it
and Peter for DS2. same reason.

And Poppy for DD1. and Hazel for DD2
because they would suit them.

Whizzgosh · 23/05/2024 21:55

I think their names really suit them and I still love them now they’re adults. If I had to choose now I’d just give dd her diminutive name that she’s always known as rather than her official name that we called her for a couple of months when she was a baby. Ds I can’t think of anything that I like anywhere near as much. I’d change both of their surnames to mine (and should never have changed mine when I got married).

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/05/2024 22:02

I really like my DC names they suit them whatever age into adulthood and beyond.

I did say to my DS that I should;ve called him Josh ( he said every 2nd boy in school was Josh/Joshuah)
I tell DD her reserve name was Mercedes , she looks at me in horror you'd have called my Sadie as as nickname , yes

queenofthewild · 23/05/2024 22:08

DS would be Nero. He's such a bloody emperor. Faffs about. Does nothing for himself.

RuthW · 23/05/2024 22:15

I'd probably call her Elizabeth, which is one of her middle names.

She had a very unusual name when she was born 27 years ago but it's very popular for under tens.

Singleandproud · 23/05/2024 22:17

This is a great thread.

DD has a long, feminine, flowery sort of name which is super popular which is annoying for her. and she is not flowery/delicate at all, she's a 5 ft 10 rugby player.

She and I have had this discussion before and she wishes Id called her the runner up name I had Iseult / Isolde. I also like Nimue.

SiobhanSharpe · 23/05/2024 22:19

I can't imagine calling now grown-up DS any other name, it suits him perfectly and he loves it.
It speaks to his Irish heritage which he's very proud of too.

Oh great question! My DD would 100% be a Stevie. I wish I'd called her it tbh but I didn't even think about it till she was already about 2. She's an individual, and a bit of a bad ass. I think a name with attitude and a bit of sass would suit her tremendously.

AddictedToBooks · 31/05/2024 10:17

I'd rename our eldest daughter "Elizabeth"

valorie · 31/05/2024 10:20

Sneezy, Sleepy, Grumpy and Doc.
