Sophia if I’m named Sophie?!

Hi! We are expecting our 2nd child and aren’t find out the gender until birth but want to shortlist names for each possibility.

My husband is really keen on the name Sophia for a girl but my name is Sophie and I’m just not sure I can get on board with it! I’m worried people will think I named the baby after myself but I’m also struggling for another name I like… what are peoples thoughts? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lots of baby boys are named after their father, why is it strange for a baby girl to be named after her mother (essentially)?

Muthaofcats · 22/05/2024 21:13

Think this would be weird. But if you’re comfortable with it go for it.

MrsDTucker · 22/05/2024 21:15

Won't you both be Soph?

JimNast · 22/05/2024 21:16

One will be Mum.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 22/05/2024 21:16

I’d find it awkward. Imagine your DH saying, “Sophie’s taking Sophia to karate” or “yeah, Sophia and Sophie both love sausages”

LeftLegRightLegYourBodyWillFollow · 22/05/2024 21:17

Either embrace it as naming her after you, or don't do it. They are both lovely names, but I wouldn't do it.

One will be Mum.

Not to dad.

I dislike children being named the same as parents of either sex. Makes me wonder whether the parent is conceited or just unimaginative.

WayOutOfLine · 22/05/2024 21:19

I named my children two similar names, don't do it! Too much confusion, especially if you are both S then last name. Just find another name that isn't so similar.

Both beautiful names, but there are lots of beautiful names. One I love at the moment, and was thinking I might name my fantasy child is 'Gloria' (was listening to the song on the radio). Might not appeal at all but there are lots of 'Sophia' type names out there.

PoppingTomorrow · 22/05/2024 21:21

I do think there's something a but weird about naming a child the same as one of its parents.

NetMum2 · 22/05/2024 21:22

I wouldn’t as a first name but definitely would as a middle name. Probably Sophie though, same as you, but it doesn’t really matter what you choose as a middle name.

How about any of the following…

Alice
Charlotte nn Lottie
Madeleine nn Maddie
Nina
Eleanor/Elinor nn Ellie
Olivia
Serena
Athena nn Attie
Chloe
Zoe
Ava
Isabella

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 22/05/2024 21:22

Men have even doing it for a thousand years. If you like the name then there no reason a
why not.

pizzaHeart · 22/05/2024 21:22

It’s a bit weird and I like both these names. It will be a bit confusing and odd and people will question why but it’s certainly not life threatening so you will survive.
Aren’t there any other names you like?

SellFridges · 22/05/2024 21:23

You can’t think of a single other name you like, other than your own? Bonkers.

ManilowBarry · 22/05/2024 21:28

Only if you can accept that later on you may be Big Soph and Little Soph.

Sums up my own views. A colleague I otherwise have a high opinion of named his son after himself and I just thought it was a bit knobby. I think Sophie/Sophia are just too similar and unless you LOVE Sophia I would move on and pick something else. You’ll get sick of the comments and responding to, “after you?”, “is it a family name?” repeatedly if nothing else.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 22/05/2024 21:45

What are you know as? If you're "Soph" could she be "Phia" or "Fire" (depending on how you're pronouncing Sophia)?

This.

As well as the fact I wouldn't want to go through life being known as "Big Soph" or "Old Soph"

Just don't even consider it.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 22/05/2024 21:53

Too similar for me, everyone will think she is names after you and it will be confusing

RitzyMcFee · 22/05/2024 21:54

It might have used to be something that men dd but I don't think I know any child with the same name as his (or her) parent. Only Neil on Gavin and Stacey and he's not real.

I would think it was strange if you were a man or a woman. I agree with the Sophie is taking Sophia to karate example.

EnfysB · 22/05/2024 21:55

These comment definitely confirm it’s not a good idea 😂 I’ll show them to my husband and we will go back to the drawing board! Really struggling to find a single name we both like. We have a little Nancy already so looking a name with a similar vibe and nothing too modern. And agree we would probably end up being little Soph and big Soph. Middle name is a good shout, my husband will hopefully be happy with that. Thanks for the honesty 😇

I know a mother and daughter Kim and Kimberley. I find it a bit strange to be honest.

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/05/2024 22:11

I know a Sofia who is known as Fia, which I love - might be an option to help differentiate your names?

To go with Nancy, do you like

Mabel
Martha
Phoebe
Clara
Freya
Maisie
Mia
Lia
Layla
Thea
Alice
Lucia
Rosie
Ivy
Elsie
Lilia
Florence
Grace
Violet
Beatrice
Matilda
Eliza

NetMum2 · 22/05/2024 22:24

How about Elizabeth nn Betty, or Eliza?

Fia is very cute and a good alternative to Soph.
Always loved the name Mabel but my husband isn’t keen. We have friends with children with lots of those names and I feel like I can’t use them if a friends child has that name, silly really! Rosie was our 2nd choice for Nancy but now I’m not sure. I love the name Edith but feel nn Eadie/Edie is maybe overused.
If it’s a boy that would make it much easier haha. Thank you xx
