Amalia?

well i am pushing 35 weeks with dd2 and still no decision on names. we need a name that works in italian, german and english as we are a slightly international family... i am dead set on Anna but dh not very keen.

last night he came up with Amalia (his first positive contribution to the debate) which i quite like to too. so we may have reached a compromise.

but i need someone to tell me whether it sounds completely daft/weird/harsh to english ears? would people misspell it or mispronounce it you think? it's fine if it's a bit exotic, i just don't want it to be weird!

the truth please!

thanks in advance!

I knew an Italian lady called Amalia

3andnomore · 04/04/2008 19:53

Hi there, also think that english people are bound to pronounce it A-may-lia...!
Not to sure about Italian names really...but how about:
Annabel/Annabella/Bella/Isabel/Isabella?

Ines

Nina

Melissa

Christina

Well A-may-lia is how you would pronounce Amelia in italian so i could actually live with that better than people pronouncing Amelia Emilia... does that make sense? prob not at all. have had a very long day!

anyway, have sampled all my family and they are all in favour including brother (the one with the ex gf called Amalia). so you just bet dh has since gone off it...

anyway thanks for all your help and pls no additional name suggestions as we're overloaded...

hm...but in german Amelia would be A-may-lia not Emillia, wouldn't it...or am I to englified....

Amalia with the accent on the second a is a favourite name from a favourite old singer
but can't see people pronouncing it right
speaking for myself it would annoy me

it is a bit like Laura like the Mediterranean pronunciation but not the english

moondog · 04/04/2008 20:10

No
Not at all

beforesunrise · 04/04/2008 20:16

I like it - maybe because I know a woman with this name who is nice. Don't think it looks lika a misspelt name. Also think it looks how it sounds - can't see how it is difficult to know how to pronounce.

TotalChaos · 04/04/2008 20:18

I think it's lovely. Amalia is the name of a famous Portuguese fado singer.

Friends with Italian connections have named their DDs:
Alessia
Sofia

lol sunrise...it's hard to get a name that works in different languages well isn't it.
We only had to get names that work in english and german equally well...because we wanted names for our children that will be pronounced exactly the same in both languages and we ended up with a Sven, a Yannic and a Flynn....all of those names are actually neither german or english, lol...with Sven being a swedish name, Yannic a french one and Flynn is an irish name....but hohum....they work for them

thanks to everyone, the more i think about it the more i like this name. all my family in favour too, so i think we may just have found dd2's name!!

i think i can live with the "no, not Amelia" and correcting people's pronounciation. after all i have to do it with my own name all the time...
