Lene etc?

Hi!
New DD due rather soon!
We're in love with the name Lene/Lena/Lina (we've Scandinavian roots) but would love a name which encorporates it, rather than having it just on it's own, as feels a little simple.
Lene would be her nickname. But what could be her full name?
Lene is often short for Helene and Magdalene in Nordic countries.

Also open to Lena and Lina :-)
What other names could have any of these as part of it?

(It seems there may be a few names which you can just add Lene to the end of and they sound nice!)
Any suggestions/opinions much appreciated! Thanks!

How funny. Today I heard Lene Marlin's 90s hit 'Sitting Down Here' for the first time in yonks and was marvelling that I still knew all the lyrics.

I feel like Lene could be short for such a lot of names:

Madalina
Madeleine
Selene
Alene
Elena
Carolina

I prefer Lene by itself to any of those I've listed though.

A few suggestions to cover the different spellings and pronunciations of Lena/Lene/Lina as a nickname.

Angelina
Caroline

Evangeline
Lavinia
Leona

Linnea (my favourite!)
Luciana
Melina

Is the pronunciation like Layn-a or Lean-a (if that makes any sense!)? Depending on the pronunciation, some of these might not work.

Angelina
Aveline
Carolina
Celina
Celine
Elena
Ellen
Emmeline
Gwendolen
Helena
Ilena
Lenora
Melina
Milena
Paulina
Selena
Selene
Valencia

Thanks so much for these!
So, pronounciation would be Lay-nuh.
(Like Lene Marlin! ❤️)
But some names with the ee-na would still possibly work with ay-nuh instead :-)

Elena is lovely, but names beginning with E and l seem extremely popular right now! We already have an Ellie in the family 😅

I think Lene on its own is lovely and very elegant.

SnoqualmieRiver · 16/05/2024 09:49

Elena is beautiful.

Pemba · 16/05/2024 09:57

Marlene? (as Lene Lovich was)

Ah that's nice to hear! I'm tempted. I just feel like its just SO simple, and sounds too much like a nickname?

Mar-lay-nuh is lovely.
But most people would say Mar-leen I fear.
Less nice!

I knew a lovely German woman who spelt it Marlena

Pemba · 16/05/2024 11:57

Mar-leen is horrendous I agree and when the name was popular in the UK (mid 20th century I think) this was usually how it was pronounced.

But it was never THAT popular here, so couldn't it be safely reintroduced as a European name with the correct Mar-layna pronunciation? Has enough time elapsed for Mar-leen to be forgotten?

Mar-leen I think was purely a British thing. Remember the (90s?) song, 'Marlene on the Wall', referencing Marlene Dietrich? It was after her, I assume, that British Marlenes were named. Just we couldn't manage to say it right!

BigYellowBird · 16/05/2024 12:21

I know an Annalena.
Also, I would go for an a ending in the UK or she will have a lifetime of correcting Lene/leen!

Riverlee · 16/05/2024 12:24

Elenor/Eleanor
Eluned (pronounced El- Lyn-Ned Welsh name)
Leona

parksom · 16/05/2024 12:32

I know somebody called Lana, that's their full name, pronounced the way you want (Lay-nuh)
I think that's lovely?

I think Lene will cause a lot of confusion with pronunciation. My mind first goes to say 'Lenny' but then I would probably stop and instead ask how to pronounce it as would be confused!

Lena/Lana is better

Pemba · 16/05/2024 12:51

Lana is pronounced Lah-na normally.

Evangeline/ Evangelina

Moreteaandchocolate · 16/05/2024 14:30

I love Lena on its own, but would spell it with an a at the end, or people will say Leen / Lenny.

How about Milena (said Mi- LAYNA - emphasis on Layna)?

namestasher · 18/05/2024 23:23

Ok ok, what do we think about having the Lene part first?
Lenemarie, for example?
Any opinions on that?
What nationality/group of do you assume when you hear Lenemarie?

Or any other suggestions in keeping with the Lene theme?
Thanks!
