Delphine? Thoughts?

DD2 will be born next month, sister to Lucy. We're French and British, living in the UK.

What do you all think of the name Delphine?
Would it be received well in the UK? What image/feeling does it conjure for you?

Thank you 🥰

Love it!

what would the nickname be?

A French-British friend has just called her child Celeste which I also think is an unusual but lovely option.

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 15/05/2024 20:19

I never know which syllable is emphasised in Delphine.

FangsForTheMemory · 15/05/2024 20:21

Love it.

Joe jonas and Sophie turners second is Delphine

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/05/2024 20:26

It's lovely. There was a character called Delphine in Cold Comfort Farm. She was a young woman, bit airy fairy, but nice.

takemeawayagain · 15/05/2024 20:29

I don't think Lucy and Delphine go together at all. If your first was called Celeste then I could see it. To me even though there's nothing wrong with Lucy, it sounds boring and unsophisticated next to Delphine.

The Cold Comfort Farm character is Elfine!

Frenchielondon · 15/05/2024 20:55

@MidnightPatrol the nickname would be Fifi as another PP said or 'Delphi' which I think is really cute.
@takemeawayagain interesting, also exhoed by a previous answer that Lucy seems quite bland in comparison. It didn't cross my mind as Delphine is quite common in France, exactly as Lucie, and no more sophisticated. Would be in the same "nice and classic name" box

You're right! Sorry.

Love it, makes me think of delphiniums.

Mimi987 · 15/05/2024 21:16

I love Delphine but it makes Lucy sound plain

KomproMatilda · 15/05/2024 21:24

Delphine is lovely but I agree it would make her older sisters perfectly nice name sound rather too solidly English by comparison!

Daphne would work really well with Lucy.

Or Lucinda / Genevieve? Lucy & Genny?

Frenchielondon · 15/05/2024 22:22

@KomproMatilda good point thanks. sadly DH not on board with Daphne and Genevieve, although very pretty is too dated in France for my taste.

Daphne is too dated but Delphine isn't? Its heyday must have been in about 1972.

Frenchielondon · 17/05/2024 20:21

@AuxArmesCitoyens yes I know I guess I know a few middle aged Genevieve so I cant imagine it on a toddler but I agree it doesnt make much sense!

I just looked it up, average age is 44. I'm sure you can find something classic but a bit more on trend.

I knew a lovely Delphine at university. She was French and I liked her name.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 17/05/2024 20:38

It's nice but very of its time. Like Gemma or Heather. Not very contemporary.

LondonFox · 17/05/2024 20:39

Reminds me of Belle Delphine.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 17/05/2024 20:39

I like it, but I'm biased as was the name of my French exchange pal mid 90s and she was lovely so I have fond associations.

ClipClopperDontStopper · 17/05/2024 20:41

it sounds like the name of big haired, glamorous (veering towards tacky) 'other woman' from a 1980s sitcom.

I quite like it though.

mangobananasmooothie · 17/05/2024 20:44

I like it and Delphi is very cute nn
Also like Elodie

Thank you for all your messages, I think we are going to settle for Esme or Serena as a first name, middle name Delphine.
Now I just have to settle between Esme or Serena and we'll be done :)
Thanks!

My personal favourite is Esme, but both are lovely names :)
