Dougray

I really like this name for a boy but the only Dougray I’ve ever encountered is Dougray Scott. Would that put you off? I don’t like Douglas, and Dougal doesn’t fit with my surname.

Thanks!

I know a bloke from Glenrothes who went to school with Dougray Scott and says, 'He wasnae fucking 'Dougray' at the school. He'd have got his arsed kicked'. I think it's actually his middle name. Glenrothes is quite rough.

He's the only one I know as well.

Moreteaandchocolate · 15/05/2024 17:23

I’ve never met anyone with this name and my first impression is I’m not that keen, sorry.

MerryChristmasToYou · 15/05/2024 18:13

It's the actor's stage name. It looks a bit made up, even though it is the actor's middle name. It sounds a bit like duggery.

AdaColeman · 15/05/2024 18:22

Sounds like the name of a dubious off shore finance company.

WindowViper · 15/05/2024 18:31

Diggory is an actually name (I’m not necessarily recommending it!)

I was going to say it sounds like a region on the shipping forecast 🤣

Piggywaspushed · 15/05/2024 19:51

The thing about Dougray is no one knows how it should be pronounced ...

Is it Doog-ray or Dug-ray?

timoteigirl · 15/05/2024 20:03

Dougray Origin and Meaning The name Dougray is a boy's name of French origin. Scottish actor Dougray (born Stephen) Scott made us aware of this name when he took on his French grandmother's surname as his stage name. Yeah Stephen Scott not sounding as cool.

Douglas? Dougal? McDougal? Gray?

I've never heard of it and this is what I was going to ask!

I LOVE it but I think I'm in a minority of one. And no, it isn't even Scott's name Grin

But how would other people know this?

MerryChristmasToYou · 15/05/2024 20:41

i googled and it said 'Dugg-ray'

OhHonestlyGetFucked · 15/05/2024 20:43

I know one. Doog-ray.

Gets called Doogs.

They’d guess and either be right or be corrected, the same as many other names 🤷‍♀️

Wouldn't put me off in the least because he is (or was, I haven't seen him recently) extremely fanciable.

However, not being Scottish I'm not entirely sure how to pronounce the name.

There is also a chance he'll grow up being called Dougie, which is slightly less romantic...!

AnCùDubh · 16/05/2024 13:36

Personally I'd go with Dougie (pronounced Doo-gee in Scotland, over Dougray - as a PP said "he isnae fucking Dougray", and from what I heard from my mate on the local paper his mum gives you quite the scolding if you call him that to her face!)

Piffpaffpoff · 16/05/2024 13:46

@AllAtSeaAgain DH was also at school with him and said the same. 😂

SirChenjins · 16/05/2024 13:49

Doo-gray, with the emphasis on doo. I don’t like it, it’s not one you hear often up here probably because there are nicer Scottish names to choose from. Also sounds v similar to the nuclear plant.

BobbyBiscuits · 16/05/2024 13:53

I'm not mad on it. I feel it might get mispronounced a fair bit as well. I guess if he doesn't like the doug bit he could call himself Ray. I like Donald. It's kind of in the same vein. But then you've got the duck, and Trump..but he'll be dead before the kid can get embarrassed hopefully?!

twentysevendresses · 16/05/2024 13:53

It's very 'clunky' to actually say OP...and doesn't sound nice at all when you say it out loud (at least in my north west accent 🤷‍♀️)

Also sounds like a dog name.

MrsAvocet · 16/05/2024 14:00

I've never heard of it and I thought it sounded like one of those things where parents combine their first names to make one up for their child, though I was struggling to think what female name the Ray part might come from!
But no, I think it sounds awkward sorry.

I thought the same and assumed it was going to be after two much loved grandfathers, Douglas and Raymond.

MerryChristmasToYou · 16/05/2024 14:52

The 'Dougray' in the actor's name is meant to be from the surname of his French grandmother.

If I made a name up from grandparents' names they'd be interesting. My DC could be something like Willabeth or Patreen. Grin
