I know, ANOTHER names thread, but would this be too poncetastic?

And I'm not even pg, just thinking about potential DC2. We had an awful time thinking of a girl's name the first time round and are stuck again.

So... what do you think of Beatrice BUT spelt (and poss pronounced) the French way, i.e. Beatrice with an accent on the first e? (can't do symbols). Neither DH or I are French, tho he has Franco-Belgian family.

Beatrice isn't getting too popular is it?

Bay e trice is poncetastic. Beatrice is lovely

EffiePerine · 03/04/2008 13:23

not even mentioning the poss middle names for both...

My dd has a middle name of Beatrix - (Dutch). Much sharper than Beatrice - and, we were hoping, less middle class?

Yay, Sorry to hijack but thought I was alone in the Queenie apppreciation society. Beatrice is LOVELY, really wouldn't bother changing anything. Never heard of Coralie before, I think I like it. Emmanuelle will always make me think of soft porn, sorry.

castille · 03/04/2008 14:26

The French pronounce it Bay-a-treece, actually

with a short "a" as in "cat" and a rolly "r" too

PerkinWarbeck · 03/04/2008 14:31

Effie - DC2?!

what exciting plans.

Beatrice was on our short list, and we shorten DD's name to the ubiquitous Bea .

Bay-a-trice v v nice indeed, but probably requires similarly European family name to work well.

we really must hear the middle names though.

Nbg · 03/04/2008 14:33

My name is Chloe and I have the little ~ above the e.

Not once has it ever been used

lulu25 · 03/04/2008 14:37

but do people address you as "klo"?

Ellbell · 03/04/2008 14:37

Beatrice is a lovely name, but the Frenchification is poncey (unless you are actually French). No-one will remember the accent or pronounce it properly. The Spanish spelling is nice, btw, but not sure how you pronounce it (do you have to lisp the 'z' sound?). Or you could pronounce it the Italian way (bay-ah-TREE-chay).

(I'd have used Beatrice for one of my dds if it wasn't for the Dante connection, which would have made it too ponce-tastic to be true for me.)

MadameCh0let · 03/04/2008 15:34

I like Béatrice. I love Béa, to rhyme with freya, but with Beatrice on the birth cert. That would be a great name imo.

I like Beatriz the Spanish version and Beatrix (dutch?) versions too. Lovely name. I think it's too strong to become very, very popular.

I really love it, but it's harder to like than say Ruby.

MrsMattie · 03/04/2008 15:36

I think Beatrice is a lovely name. You have to be realistic about accents, though. I have one over my (Gaelic) name and I rarely if ever use it in the UK as people don't really understand what it's all about and I was sick of sounding like a complete ponce when reminding people to include it.

tearinghairout · 03/04/2008 15:43

People of a certain age would always associate Emanuelle with porn, unfortunately.

When the Duchess of York called her DD Beatrice evryone was horrified - it had come out of nowhere, but seems more popular now. I wouldn't, personally - think Mills.

What about Camille? (Pronounced either CamEEy or Cameel) I met some French people once whose dd was called that & thought it was lovely. Or is it a bit too much like Camay?

tearinghairout · 03/04/2008 15:55

Gisele is gorgeous. I t doesn't matter if she's a big girl - she's likely to be the only Gisele that people know, and the name will be her, IYKWIM.

DDs freind is called Adele. Again, no preconceptions 'cos she's unique!

Nbg · 03/04/2008 19:13

lulu25 I've had clo, closit, cloz, cleo

EffiePerine · 03/04/2008 19:27

I thought of Beatrix on the way home, oddly. I rather like it .

This is very previous tho, if we do manage DC2 it's bound to be another boy and will NOT be called Ralph .

Amelie (?sp) is nice so is Beatrice
May get shortened to Bea or BB or even Trix

helpmehelpme · 04/04/2008 05:40

we know a Beatrice, it isn't too popular imo.

But I wouldn't do the accent, it just makes life hard for the child to constantly be explaining their name, it's a drag.
