Is Toby a boring name?

Due very soon with baby boy and I am still really struggling with a name! We had chosen a name, but I started having doubts and now we’re back to square one.

One of original names we had shortlisted was Toby, but I was put off it because it just seems too….standard? For context, we already have a little girl with a fairly uncommon first name. My concern is if we call baby boy Toby is it going to look like we’ve just not bothered to think of a more unusual name for him? I just remember being so excited to announce baby girls name and see everyone’s reaction but feel like with Toby people might be a bit underwhelmed.

Middle name would probably be either Toby Thomas or Toby Theodore; my OH is a big fan of Toby Thomas but to me this makes it feel even more of a basic name. My favourites were Arley Thomas or Milo Thomas but OH isn’t sold on these.

Also, OH does not like Tobias or Tobiah which I have previously suggested so they wouldn’t be an option. I don’t like Tobin which I have seen come up previously.

Any opinions or names suggestions would be great 😌

Love Toby and it’s not that common. Your alternatives are more boring and less classy.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 09/05/2024 08:30

When I hear Toby I instantly think Toby Carvery

Ankylo · 09/05/2024 08:32

I always find it a bit of a meek name. But it may be because I remember someone saying that to me! You mention Theodore. What about Theo?

CravingCoffeeCake · 09/05/2024 08:34

Theo seems to be even more popular near me, and one of our friends already has a little Theo so we can’t really use it

I like Toby and don't know a single Toby

Amx · 09/05/2024 08:39

Yes it is imo.

NarnianQueen · 09/05/2024 08:43

I think it's a lovely name!
Toby Theodore is great

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/05/2024 08:45

I know 3 Tobys , one is really Tobias. 2 are adults and one a teenager.
Seems a classic name that isn't overused.
Milo seems like it will be popular only for a short time and Arley seems like Arlo gone wrong. I don't like either of them, they seem like dog names.

I wouldn't worry about the middle name.

Tom/Thomas is classic and is great. Theo seems to be every other little boy's name, so boring.

Isitisit · 09/05/2024 08:45

I think it’s a great name and prefer it to your other suggestions.

DearOccupant · 09/05/2024 08:45

Unlike others I know 4 young Toby’s (we are in the southeast), so I wouldn’t go for it for that reason. It’s a perfectly nice name though.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/05/2024 08:48

It’s a classic name for me in that I know a smattering over most generations, and not boring. I like it but would prefer it being short for Tobias.

Sliiim · 09/05/2024 08:51

i actually think Toby is a really sweet name, one they can grow up with too!

Els1e · 09/05/2024 08:52

I like the name Toby and don’t know any (and I work in a school)

SuuzeeeQ · 09/05/2024 08:53

I have a cousin called Tobias who sometimes goes by Toby. He is nearly 40, very tall and Toby really doesn’t suit him. For me it’s a kids name not so much for adults. a bit like Thommy.
At work he uses Tobias.

I do actually know an adult Toby from work (would be in his 50’s I believe) and he suits it, so I don’t really see the age issue but I suppose it depends from person to person. I like Tobias but my partner doesn’t, and it doesn’t work as well with our surname so wouldn’t be an option.

Me too. I love those carveries.

I know a very tall adult Tommy who is a police officer. It absolutely suits him. I don't see an issue with an adult Toby personally, there's lots of adults with that type of name

Orangemangogrape · 09/05/2024 09:10

I know a Tobin. Very sweet.

I’m not a fan personally, but I’m sure little Tobin is very sweet :)

Just makes me think of Peter Tobin.

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/05/2024 09:20

The Toby who is Tobias on his BC is Tob-ee-as not Tob-eye-as, which is due to one parent being dual nationality. I think it sounds fresh and current.

Greentrilby · 09/05/2024 09:24

I think it’s a great name for a child but doesn’t really grow for an adult iyswim.
i imagine an adult Toby to be round, sturdy and wearing clothes a bit too small for him. Tom, in my view, is much nicer.

DitheringBlidiot · 09/05/2024 09:26

I don't know any adult males called Toby who aren't the most boring men I've ever known. But maybe that's just name association, or a generational thing. I'm in my 30s

FlameTulip · 09/05/2024 09:27

I love Toby - much prefer it to Theo.

outlandishly · 09/05/2024 09:27

I know lots of Tobys... two are family members and I've taught many Tobys and a Tobias.
I suppose I see it as a pretty normal name.
