classic names with quirky nicknames?

Recently realized that I quite like classic names that have quirky nicknames, and was wondering if anyone could think of any. Things like these:

Boys

  1. Laurence "Laurie" -> not too unexpected, but still kind of quirky I'd say?
  2. Christopher "Kit"
  3. Robert "Robin"
  4. James "Jem"
  5. Nicholas "Nico"

Girls

  1. Marjorie "Romy" -> love!
  2. Ophelia "Effie"
  3. Elizabeth "Birdie"
  4. Charlotte "Lola"

I have more trouble with this sort of thing for girls, because it seems most girls nicknames are quite quirky in their own right. Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions for either gender because I'm finding myself liking these types of diminutives quite a bit :)

Disclaimer:I'm pretty old school posh myself.

But to me "quirky shortenings" are definitely old school posh. I grew up, for example, with a Penelope who was known as Plods.

Toffee for Dorothy based on how her older sister pronounced her name.

@newnamenellie "Just use the quirky name!"

Please don't. My poor DS would be called Patch if I'd done that!

Tatty isn’t a complimentary name in the slightest.

I have just read one of the Persephone Short Story Books and there is a character in one of the stories named Lisby . . . I've never come across this before and presume it's short for Elizabeth as it's so similar to Libby

Josephine - Posy
Josephine Joan - Jojo

I really think Lola is most commonly knows as a diminutive of Dolores. It’s also a name in its own right. Both Lola and Dolores are Spanish names.
I had no idea it could be short for Charlotte. I’ve only ever met Lola’s who are simply named Lola.

Riverlee · 11/05/2024 21:59

Richard - Dick
William - Willy

You can’t predict nicknames and they often develop organically. sting, the singer got his nickname because he wore a yellow and black stripey jumper apparently.

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/05/2024 08:18

Jonathan- Jonty
Philip - Pip
Alexander - Sasha
