Looking for Welsh names for girls that English speakers could attempt and that aren’t too old fashioned in Wales. DH or Welsh heritage and plan to move back there at some point (North Wales)

list so far

Cadi
Manon
Glesni
Tesni - though not sure I’m fond of Tessa type names
Mali

Suggestions welcome

Not Welsh but a name I really like is Maja (pronounced My-ah) but that’s because I watch a lot of Scandi noir 😁

Eleri
Mair
Sian
Ffion
Rhian

Not Rhian! That’s my name and while I love it, people really struggle to even say the anglicised version, plus they always think it is short for something else. OP said a name that English people can pronounce and it really isn’t. Trust me!

I know a Welsh Maia. It works in Welsh because Mai is Welsh for May. You could use Mai, too.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/05/2024 21:32

Yes, like pp I forgot to say I know a couple of young Maia’s ( I live in Wales) . It’s automatically pronounced like the month with an “a” on the end ( Mai = “My”) here. I suspect in England that would still be the same ( as people are fairly familiar with similar Maya and Gaia) - even though the name comes from the Spring Goddess so I want it to be “May-ah” in English🤣 Gorgeous name either way.

We have an Anwen and a Menna

PoppingTomorrow · 06/05/2024 23:37

I'm not Welsh but Welsh-speaking attached!

Eleri
Betsan
Heledd
Mali (though agree many English will assume pronounced "Marley"
Mari (same as above)
Mabli
Mererid
Lowri (but often mispronounced)
Hari (for Angharad)
Nia

Clearinguptheclutter · 07/05/2024 07:10

Eleri is also badly pronounced

in England always Ellory.

Sboncen · 07/05/2024 07:33

@Clearinguptheclutter , or they say it as Eh-lairy.
Heledd will be said as Heleth - many can't distinguish between DD and TH. (Heleth sounds too much like helaeth).

Mererid will be Merrer-rid.

Elin and Maia are both scandi-ish.

As a Welsh person. Can you tell me if female names are not supposed to end with a vowel sound?

What about male?

If you have a name that ends without a vowel but the shortened nickname has a vowel sound, is that incorrect?

Thanks

Sboncen · 08/05/2024 12:02

@Pontypool , Girls and boys names can end in a vowel or consonant.
Many of the diminutives end in a vowel, but some don't.

Names ending in -a or -wen are usually girls' names. Names ending in -o, -yn or -wyn are usually boys' names.

Thanks for that. Do you know that from memory or is there something I can refer to when picking names. I got a baby coming don't know gender yet

Probably best to do it the other way around, choose some names that you like and ask a native speaker about them.

Sboncen · 08/05/2024 12:16

Exactly that. Pick a name you like. What sort of (English/your native language/other) names do you like?

It'll definitely be Welsh. All my children have Welsh names.my son is Arwyn my daughter is Ceridwen

Sboncen · 08/05/2024 20:46

Good strong underused names, @Pontypool . Meirion or Morfudd perhaps.

PickledScrump · 08/05/2024 21:44

I have a Seren, Eleri and Eira. All are pronounced fine although I often have to clarify the pronunciation between ay-ra and eye-ra as both are correct but we use ay-ra.
