Charlotte
Violet
Juliet
Scarlett
Colette

Please give your reasoning as well. I won't be offended if you have a harsh opinion.

Second question... how much weight do you put in other people's opinions about names? If someone told you she associated Violet with "violence" and you really liked the name, would her opinion deter you?

Thank you!

I

DinaofCloud9 · 04/05/2024 22:19

Sorry.

I like Violet and Juliet.

I don't care about other people's opinions when it comes to naming my child.

FangsForTheMemory · 04/05/2024 22:22

Charlotte

Catlover1705 · 04/05/2024 22:22

Violet, a pretty flower name.
I dislike Charlotte and Colette.

stickybear · 04/05/2024 22:22

I love Juliet

Cinai · 04/05/2024 22:23

Juliet is gorgeous

LoubyLou92 · 04/05/2024 22:25

Violet is my favourite from your list! I think it sounds pretty and works for all ages.

I’m not a fan of Charlotte but I think that’s just because growing up there were 5 in my class, so to me it feels extremely common. I don’t think it is as common now.

Juliet feels old to me, I can’t imagine a child/teen called Juliet.

I don’t hate Scarlett but there’s something about it I’m not keen on, can’t put my finger on what.

I really dislike Colette. I feel it’s a bit harsh sounding.

In relation to peoples opinions - it really depends on whose opinion it is, and what it is. Generally I don’t care too much (my daughter has a very marmite name and I don’t care if people like it or not).

SmallIslander · 04/05/2024 22:27

They are so similar it's hard to say which I prefer, but it would probably be Violet.

Dareisayiseethesunshine · 04/05/2024 22:28

Colette is lovely.. Cole for a teen is cool.

Toptotoe · 04/05/2024 22:29

Love violet it’s a bit different. I also like Collette - very chic and French . I used to read books by someone called Collette years ago that were set in France and I really enjoyed them.

Workawayxx · 04/05/2024 22:32

I think they are all lovely names. Personal favourite is Juliet then Charlotte. Collette and Scarlett feel a tiny bit dated to me. Violet is pretty and I wouldn’t associate with violent but I went on holiday and stayed next to a family with a Violet whose dad constantly shouted “VILE-ETT!!” So it’d worry me if it was pronounced properly with the o in the local accent.

VeraForever · 04/05/2024 22:33

Not Scarlet .

ThisIsMyRubbishUsername · 04/05/2024 22:36

Juliet and Violet. They are pretty names and I like the way they can be shortened too. They sound strong, cool, independent, fun names.

I really don’t like Colette or Scarlett - they sound harsh to me, I think I don’t like the strong ‘tt’ sound and the fact the Colette I knew was always called ‘Col’. Scarlett I always associate with illness/pain - scarlet fever, scarlet cheeks, scarlet red etc. I just don’t like it.

I don’t really care if people like a name or not though. It doesn’t change my opinion of it.

ToffeenutLatte · 04/05/2024 22:37

Personally the only name there that I would consider is Juliet and I love it. I think its beautiful, feminine but not frilly and suits all ages.

Violet is pretty but very popular currently.

The rest are all names of people I know around my own age ~30 so I think they seem a little dated for the new generation but not old enough to be "old-fashioned and due a comeback"

I cared deeply what my Mum thought of my DDs name but outside of that I wasn't too fussed, though I will say I've largely had very positive reactions to the name I chose. Perhaps I'd feel differently now if I was consistently met with criticism over it.

GoodVibesHere · 04/05/2024 22:40

My favourite is Charlotte, and I like the nicknames Charlie or Lottie.

Violet is a boring flower a bit like a weed so I'm not fussed.

Scarlett is dated and Colette is a bit bland.

OliveTheaBough · 04/05/2024 22:40

Charlotte - I don’t like it in my local accent, also rhymes with harlot
Violet - meh
Juliet - beautiful
Scarlett - nice enough, very different to your other choices
Colette - dated

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/05/2024 22:51

My favourite is Charlotte because I love classic, timeless names, and it gives lovely options to be Charlie / Lottie / Charlotte depending on age, situation and personality.

Juliet would be my second choice - another lovely classic and she has the option of Jules as a shortening, which I could imagine would sound cool among my teenage daughter’s friends.

Violet is third - I think it has a beautiful vintage feel. I’m not so keen on Vi for short though.

Colette - I like how pretty but underused it is. It sounds slightly dated to me - I find it hardest of your name choices to imagine in my teenage daughter’s friendship group.

Scarlett - is the opposite of Colette - it sounds brilliant for a teen, but personally I don’t feel I could pull it off as an adult (I feel like I would need to be blond and wear red lipstick somehow!!)

I think other people’s opinions are a bit like tripadvisor reviews - there are always going to be some negative opinions, but as long as it’s a minority with that view, it wouldn’t bother me personally.

Enko · 04/05/2024 22:55

I like Colette the best it has character. A name people know and can say and unlike the others isn't run of the mill loads of them around.

Nicebloomers · 04/05/2024 23:06

Colette is tres chic. Second choice Juliet. Violet is pretty. Charlotte and Scarlett are so over done.

I would not care what other people said about my baby name choices one jot. Absolutely do not reveal name choices or even shortlist until after you have your baby.

Comfysock · 04/05/2024 23:09

LOVE Colette
ADORE Juliet
Because they are beautuful French names

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/05/2024 01:55

Juliet by far- elegant, timeless, well known, yet surprisingly underused. People seem bothered on MN by “Julie - ET” vs “JULIE - et” but I like it both ways so that wouldn’t bother me personally (find the Juliette spelling a bit frilly though - Shakespearean Juliet just looks nicer imo).

Charlotte is elegant too and so classic but just a bit too overused/common place in comparison at the moment. Plus I’m personally not as keen on the sound “Shar- lutt”, I wish the “lott” was more pronounced as we would for nn “Lottie”.

Violet and Scarlet, I don’t find anywhere near as elegant or classic and I think they have a much harsher sound so I’m not keen( the Violet close to the word violence thing wouldn’t bother me though - the colour springs to mind first).

Colette sounds so chic - but also very strongly French to me (like Pierre on a boy). I think I’d find it hard to pull off without a French link? (Nicole would be easier but doesnt have quite the same feel, being much more widely used).

Theoldwoman · 05/05/2024 01:59

Charlotte

MissedItByThisMuch · 05/05/2024 02:02

I love Juliet best - classic but not massively popular, works for all ages, and a Juliet could be 1 or 100 or anywhere in between
Charlotte is a nice classic but more popular
Don’t like Scarlett, it sounds harsh and ugly to me
Violet is fine and I find the “sounds like violent” objection silly - Charlotte sounds like harlot, Lucas sounds like mucus etc. You can do it with lots of names, it’s meaningless
Colette sounds dated to me

RogueFemale · 05/05/2024 02:14

danascully96 · 04/05/2024 22:14

Charlotte
Violet
Juliet
Scarlett
Colette

Second question... how much weight do you put in other people's opinions about names? If someone told you she associated Violet with "violence" and you really liked the name, would her opinion deter you?

Thank you!

Charlotte - loads of Charlottes, but a pretty name
Violet - pretty but faintly dowdy if not a pretty girl
Juliet - boring girl at school, I think there were actually two of them
Scarlett - my sister's name and have always been a bit envious (though I do like my own name a lot)
Colette - too directly associated with the author unless you're French, perhaps - would never use if UK citizen

Seapsweetsesamethingy · 05/05/2024 02:21

Scarlett is very pretty and I don’t know of any Scarletts.
