Hanna - no H

HollsMollsi · 04/05/2024 12:24

Baby girl no.2 is due in July. The only name we both like is Hanna, but without the H at the end, we just don’t like how it looks.
Our older daughter is Bella.
Do you think we are ok to use Hanna without the H on the end? We really don’t like Hannah with the extra H so it would be back to the drawing board which is devastating as I love Hanna !

Hanna is fine without the H. I don’t pronounce Hana like I would Hanna/h.

I know Hannah's, a Hanna and a Hana. You have to accept that the name comes various ways now and you might get any version of that. It's so pretty though, I'd use it anyway, but you can't get upset if people spell it wrong as now the more international versions are known, that's inevitable.

Hanna Pickard is a philosopher, seems to work ok for her.

I associate Hanna with the Islamic spelling as I know several. So for me, not being Muslim, I personally wouldn't use that spelling.

I am generally for traditional spellings or choose another name type person. Besides it's sounds exactly the same and I think Hannah looks much prettier.

I know two German and Polish Hanna’s - both women in their 50s so definitely not given an Islamic name. I think it’s a pretty common spelling outside of the Anglosphere.

ASighMadeOfStone · 04/05/2024 14:22

It's lovely with either spelling, and surely widespread enough in this day and age for people to cope with a different spelling.
It's the usual spelling in far more countries than Hannah is, after all. And the UK (if that's where you are) is multicultural enough to realise that.

LauderSyme · 04/05/2024 14:24

I think Hanna is lovely and the way you want to spell it strikes me as simply a more international vibe.

It goes beautifully with Bella too so I say go for it 🙂

Metrictum · 04/05/2024 14:25

I know of two Hannas both Scandinavian so I assumed it was the typical spelling over there.

Im slightly amused at loving the name so much but you would be unable to use it with one extra written consonent.

Westfacing · 04/05/2024 14:30

I've known two Hanna's with a Middle Eastern background, and one Scandinavian background.

It's a lovely name and either spelling looks fine!

Maymaybe94 · 04/05/2024 14:30

I am a Hanna and I like the spelling too! Something a little different but not too different. People will always assume it is spelt Hannah but I normally spell my name out if it is for something important. Go for it!

Runningonempty01 · 04/05/2024 14:31

I work in a pretty multi cultural school, I know students called Hana, Hannah, and Hanna all perfectly acceptable

EvdaHabepip · 04/05/2024 18:44

We have very very similar taste, my 3 girls are Hanna (also no H), Bella and Pippa.
No issues with Hanna’s spelling we tend to just say “Hanna with one H” if it’s important!
I think they are such pretty sweet names.

That's how Hannah is spelt in Welsh, so there are plenty in Wales! Don't think you'll find it a problem.

It's Hannah in Welsh. Maybe somes spell it Hanna but the ones I know are Hannah.

saturnspinkhoop · 04/05/2024 19:10

I like it without an h. Yes you will likely have to tell people how to spell it, but once they know, they know. As a PP pointed out, that very classic name, Catherine, has many ways of spelling it.

To add to the list of ways to spell Hanna, I once knew a Hannagh.

HappyAsASandboy · 04/05/2024 19:45

Hanna is lovely. As is Hannah. All good, just choose the spelling you like.

17caterpillars1mouse · 04/05/2024 21:31

I know lots of Hannah's / Hanna's of all ages and don't see the issue. My dd has a Hanna in her class, not an issue at all and definitely doesn't cheapen the name. Hanna is used in lots of different cultures across the globe

PieFaces · 04/05/2024 21:35

Hannah is a beautiful name

FlatWhite2 · 04/05/2024 21:40

Hanna is absolutely fine without the H. You might have to correct family members once or twice but really who cares. Use the spelling you like better, it’s your baby!

HannahName · 04/05/2024 21:56

Just as a counter to some of the opinions posted here, I am Hannah with an h and find that my name is often misspelled as Hanna in work emails from people who do not have English as a first language. This includes people from a variety of countries. So I think 'Hanna' is probably the more international spelling. (I am not sure why they misspell my name when they can see the correct spelling in my email signature, but that's another conversation lol).

People from the UK will likely assume that it is spelled with an h, but I am still usually asked to confirm that spelling when I give my name over the phone etc.

I personally like the palindromic spelling, but to each their own :D

As an aside, I have always loved my name, it's elegant and timeless and is one of those rare names that truly suits every age. It was a fairly common name in my birth year, but I think not so much now. So you're making a good choice!

wp65 · 04/05/2024 22:00

Hanna is the more common spelling elsewhere in Europe! I love it, I'd go for it if I were you.

Waltzers · 06/05/2024 10:29

I have a Hannah and when giving her name, she's often asked if there's a H on the end. I think it's pretty well known that some people spell it without.

Finnished · 06/05/2024 10:31

Hanna is how it's spelt in Germany / Nordic countries. I'd never seen it spelt "Hannah" until I was in UK.

Viviennemary · 07/05/2024 08:37

It's just a name with a spelling mistake. Don't.

SkaneTos · 07/05/2024 08:55

I'm from Scandinavia, and there the most common spelling of that name is "Hanna", so to me it looks very normal!
Hanna and Johanna are popular names in my generation, I was born in the late 80's.
I think Hanna is a beautiful name!

Hannahspeltbackwards · 07/05/2024 08:59

My username wouldn't be the same if it was spelt Hanna.

CelesteCunningham · 07/05/2024 10:42

But Hannah is a palindrome! That's just cool, I don't know why you would make the name less cool.

Hannah is the usual spelling of the first name, and Hanna a very common surname here so I would stick with Hannah.
