Does it MATTER if the name you choose is top 5 / top 10 / whatever? DH thinks so - I don't!

Hey, Popsy, are you pg?

Hulababy · 03/04/2008 08:50

Ah, how lovely Popsy. DD really suits her name and I still love it.

Heifer · 03/04/2008 09:10

I don't think it matters at all, pick a name you both like.

DD is in the top 10 (probably top 5 but not sure haven't look at the list for a while). We have only come across 1 other in the last 4 years that is in the same class (swimming) none at nursery etc.

On the other hand if we had a boy he was going to be called Evan which I am sure isn't on the list.

Do you know the sex (or you going to find out)?

bluenosesaint · 03/04/2008 09:13

One of my dd's has a top ten name. There are surprisingly very few of them (the name) around here and she remains the only * in her class and one of two in the whole school.

Not a problem for us

sweetkitty · 03/04/2008 09:18

DD1 is Abbie and although it's always hovering around number 22 I know at least another 5, she's the only one at nursery now though. One of my friends now has an Abbie as well and it does get confusing at times. We tend to call my Abbie Abigail so we know which one we are talking about.

DD2's name is very unusual, there were only 3 registered in Scotland last year not that I know these things. I absolutely love her name.

DD3 will have a commonish name in that it's about 70th.

The thing with top 10 names is you probably already "know" someone with that name so it kind of rules it out.

DontDreamItBeIt · 03/04/2008 09:20

We didn't look at the lists at all for either of the dds, but did have alot of trouble chosing names. DD2 was nameless for 6 weeks, and we finally chose the number one name in the list for that year There is another girl of the same name oppsosite and I would've chosen differently if I had known, but couldn't imagine her as anythig else.
She is the only one in her class, and only one of two in her year at school.

raye123 · 03/04/2008 09:26

My dd has a name that's been in the top 3 for years - we chose it because it was one of the few we could agree on and because it's a lovely name. And anyway, aren't they in the top ten for a reason?? They're usually great names (the traditional ones, I mean, not the 'trendy' ones!!)
Oh, and so far we haven't met another child with dd's name.

suedonim · 03/04/2008 10:09

Ds2's name has always been in the top 10, it's a perennial favourite, although he was born in the days before those Most Popular Names lists were published. I only know two others with his name; his uncle, who is more than 30yrs older than him, and a friend's grandson, who's 25yrs younger than ds! I still love the name.

MamaG · 03/04/2008 14:58

HEifer I'm only 10 weeks so no, I don't know the sex yet - but I will find out, I'm FAR too impatient not to.

We've 99% decided on a name for boy and girl

mybestfriendiscalledstig · 03/04/2008 15:09

ds has a very boring top 10 name - but it was one dh & I had always both loved. We know two other child with his name.

dd has a very unusual name - not in top 100 I should imagine - we know one other child with her name (in RL - & one on here!)

National stats not representative of the local population imho.

cheesesarnie · 03/04/2008 15:11

2 of my children have very common names but ds1 i dont know any others in our area which i was shocked at.ds2 i know 2 that are older.BUT i dont care!i gave them the names i liked -couldnt care less how popular etc they are.

PinkTulips · 03/04/2008 15:17

dd is extremely common over here and ds is extremely uncommon.

tbh ds's causes more annoyance due to people having to have it repeated 20 times and still pronouncing it wrong... it's Caleb ffs, how hard it that?

i had an unusual, difficult to spell name growing up and i hated it. it drew alot of attention in school and makes it very easy for other kids to tease you

MadameCh0let · 03/04/2008 15:29

Before you have a child it's hard to grasp what it will mean if a name is #1. Would every second child be called that name? Or every fifth?

I think it would be useful to have a percentage next to the rank.

ok mamag, i now have this picture in my head of loads of kids called One, Ten etc

ipanemagirl · 03/04/2008 16:15

I love Daniel but dh says it's far too popular and everyone will call the child 'Dan' or Danny and he's not that keen on those.

I don't mind a name being popular myself.

MamaG · 03/04/2008 20:51

DH insists we are not using the name I like

I have suggested antoher name, not even in top 100, but he says its "too posh"

fuckybollocks

Better hope its a girl

I love teh name Evie but it's just everyone's favourite name at the moment . I have another name (For a girl) which I always said I would use. It's a variation of my dad's name (he died in 2000) but I have a real fear that my brother and his wife may use it. If they do I am sorry but I am going to use it too.

no

merryberry · 03/04/2008 21:06

you have to wait until he's been your birth partner and he's giddy with relief at your safe delivery and then you say "oh but we have to call him 'fuckybollocks' (you do realise that you have now made me think that that is the too-posh name )he so looks like one" and generally overbear him with the hormones etc

MarsLady · 03/04/2008 21:08

I think that as long as the name is SQUONK you'll be okay!

BigBadMouse · 03/04/2008 21:12

My DD1 has the most popular girls name for the year she was born (and several years before and after her birth too I think). It suits her very well and she loves it. Funny thing is that there is only one other at nursery with the same name (big nursery) and I rarely hear other children with the same name - seems other mums who liked the name changed it slightly - no idea how it stayed at the top really, I guess it must be a geographical thing. DD2's name was 60th on the list and we are bumping into little girls with the same name whereever we go. I would say if you really like the name, go for it regardless. I bet you'll not regret it either.

btw my name was the top girls name for the year I was born yet I rarely meet another person with the same name. I was always the only one in my class at school.

I guess when we are older, we don't necessarily mix with people the same age so in our group of friends we can still be very unique yet have a relatively common name.

PortAndLemon · 03/04/2008 21:17

If it matters to you, then it matters. If it doesn't matter to you, then it doesn't matter (of course, the you-and-DH-disagreeing scenario doesn't help there). I think it also depends on how common / unusual the surname is, TBH.

Most of the names we considered for DS but rejected prtly for being too popular he has ended up in a nursery class with at least one boy with that name, so I'm glad that we personally opted for a name lower down the popularity scale.

TodayToday · 03/04/2008 21:21

My DD1 has a top 10 name. It was a shock to me when naming my child that DH didn't like any of the names I had always had in mind and I didn't like any of the names he had in mind. I forgot that it wasn't all MY choice So, DD1's name was the only name we liked on at the time.

She does have another of the same name in her class at school. But then again there are 2 Harriets and that's far from a top 10 name.

For DD2 I liked Annabel and for awhile wished we had called DD1 that name as it is less popular. If we had called her Annabel, she would have been one of two Annabels in the class!

We didn't name DD2 Annabel But her name, which is ranked between 40 and 50, is heard more frequently in our area than DD1s. You can't win. It is best to go with the name you and your DP like the most.
